25. My God.
I don't know how to feel about this. It isn't "our" fight, but do we sit back and watch? If Qaddafi wins this, what will the punishment be for the remaining citizens?

This "no-fly" thing sounds like a razor's edge. I think if we commit to it we've agreed to another war. The thought of it makes me sick, but...is it the only answer besides turning our backs?

13. I disagree.
we should set up a no fly zone and then bomb any threatening sites , we should then sit back and wait for AJ to start showing the dead bodies of women and children on TV's across the middle east so we can kill this grass roots movement that has swept some arab nations and rally the people behind their respectful dictators.. Enough with democracy and freedom already.

Fuel the planes boys...

No intervention, and pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan. This is for the Libyans to decide without US interference. The US always fucks up everywhere: Somalia, Haiti, everywhere.

...it ain't like Somalia or Haiti were bustling, peaceful economies prior to our 'help'

Certainly, the US likes to try and mold the domestic policy and usually screws it up. Plus, I agree that we need to get the heck out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Egypt is "done", the rest of the "Middle East" is going through their own internal turmoil with "uninteresting" mixed results, and they MUST command those eyeballs while the fascist repuke agenda gets rammed through, state by state, without "anyone" else knowing about it... Otherwise by golly the proles will rebel!

16. You Are Oversimplifying
Until we secure alternate energy, we as a nation will have to play politics in the ME. Khaddafi has never done anything to attract our sympathy. Remember LOCKERBIE? Tell the Americans who lost loved ones there why we should stay out of Khaddafi's efforts to crush his opposition.

The world is a complex place, and local ME politics are complex. We have military options other than invasion -- the most logical being the imposition of a "no fly" zone and a naval blockade. The Enterprise battle group is steaming from the Red Sea to the Eastern Mediterranean, I believe.

Nobody wants to use the military. But Khaddafi does not merit our sympathy. And it seems like his opposition merits our support. American military power exists to project American democratic values, doesn't it?

"American military power exists to project American democratic values, doesn't it?"
Where did THAT come from?
The military exist to defend America....nothing more.

Attraction would work better to project "American Values" than bombs.
Maybe we should try that.

32. Bullshit. Our military exists to make the world safe for dollar a day labor.
However, from what I read, the Libyan resistance is fine with a no-fly zone--they just don't want any foreigh rroops on their soil, period.

I really don't want Libya to turn into a killing field but the rest of the international community has to step up and bear some of the burden.

35. "the international community has to step up". Agreed. The UN has the primary responsibility here.
Let the Security Council take responsibility for this. If Russia or China block action (as they have indicated they might), they will be responsible for what happens in Libya and later in other countries that unleash their militaries on civilians rising up against dictators.

23. Yup
The United States kind of has a credibility problem right now in a lot of the rest of the world. Any assistance we render will be used as a pretext to taint whoever or whatever comes after Khaddafi ("Puppet of the American empire!"). This is, at root, an internal Libyan affair, and the blood of the Libyan people belongs on the hands of Khaddafi and his supporters. After he is gone, it will be up to the Libyan people to determine the guilt and punishment of those who killed their countrymen.

If the U.S. would like to retrieve some of its credibility, and lend a voice to freedom-loving people around the globe in support of their right to self-determination, we should investigate our own recent past and bring charges as appropriate for crimes against humanity. Otherwise, we're self-important fuckheads trying to dictate standards to other people that we're not willing to live up to ourselves. We deserve to be ignored, at the very least.

Edited on Tue Mar-08-11 05:49 AM by Distant Observer
Those who want to attack should just find a good book on the history of Libya and chill.

Ghadaffi is weird, for the western perspective, but has never ruled as the monster that is being depicted, and he is not "destroying" the opposition held towns the way we laid waste to places like fallujah in Iraq.

I'm not saying they don't want/need some form of help - help..not invasion, not occupation, not an "interim government" set up by America...but I am asking - has anyone even bothered to ask the people of Libya what they want from foreign governments?
