Keep school funding
I was struck by the following sentence in a Star article on cuts to school funding approved by the Kansas House: “Supporters of the cuts argued the state has no alternative but to rein in spending after years of declining state revenues.”
Those supporters of the cuts are wrong. There is always a choice. After all, there was a vote on the issue.
Legislators could choose to balance the budget by eliminating some of the many state sales tax exemptions or by temporarily raising the state income tax for top earners until the economy improves. Instead, a majority of Kansas House members are choosing to require sacrifice from children, the sick, the poor, teachers and other public servants — those who can least afford it.
The public budget reflects society’s moral values and priorities. All 30 Kansas House Democrats voting on the issue opposed the cuts, believing it is unacceptable to reduce public investment in education to protect and enhance the wealth of the already wealthy. Of the 91 Kansas House Republicans voting on the issue, 81 voted for the cuts, reflecting their belief that this is not just acceptable but preferable.
