Ohio's union bill is tougher than Wisconsin's, so where is the outrage?
Edited on Tue Mar-08-11 01:30 AM by grahamhgreen
"The Ohio bill is similar to the one pending in Wisconsin in that it eliminates collective-bargaining rights except for wages, and it forces workers to pay more of their health and pension costs. However, the bill goes further in making it illegal for workers to strike.

Among other measures, the bill also broadens the factors that can determine layoffs or dismissals and limits the number of vacation days and paid holidays for long-time workers. Teacher contracts can no longer set ratios, such as the number of students per teacher, and pay is based on merit, not necessarily length of service.
Gov. John Kasich (R) says the bill is needed to help trim the state’s forecasted $8 billion budget shortfall."

2. We kinda need an opposition party
Kucinich and few others are hanging in the wind. The silence is deafening, and telling.

4. Not worried
Even those that identify themselves as conservative and work in public service vehemently oppose this bill.

I'm not worried at all. It will serve to galvanize the electorate when '12 rolls around. This is assuredly headed for referendum and I'm extremely confident this union busting bill will be voted down.

Kasich and the Reptilicans have bit off more than they can chew, and only accomplished stirring up the political hornet's nest.

There will be electoral hell to pay in 2012.

5. What good is Obama going to do?
Seriously, the guy is not into unions. He's definitely not into teachers unions (see: Central Falls RI) Labor needs to kick ass and take names without the albatross of any political party. We can do this. :)

7. The thing tthat is different about Wisconsin is that there are enough Democrats to deny
--the Senate a quorum. In Ohio that was a lost cause from the beginning.

10. Yep, I ready to put on my walking shoes & hit the streets for signatures
when the call comes. We'll have to get a lot more signatures than required as we has a GOP SOS whom I'm sure to attempt to keep this off the ballot.

11. Again with the references to Obama -
as I told you yesterday it is better for folks if he stays out of it. Why stir up the partisan activity when we have low/middle income folks acting in solidarity against the owners? What is your interest in doing that?

Workers uniting across party lines is the only way we fight the owners - the only possible way to take down capitalism. Yet some on this website fight so hard to keep those partisan battles going. Do you (meaning "you" in the global sense) have a financial interest in keeping the status quo?

and for just the reasons you named.

Labor should NOT be a partisan issue, period.

17. We want to win in WI
In Ohio, Obama stayed silent and we lost.

This is evidence that the same thing may likely happen in Ohio.

You don't win battles by not fighting them.

20. What do you want to "win"? Please be specific in your answer.
Edited on Tue Mar-08-11 02:46 PM by TBF
I agree you don't win battles by not fighting - but let's define what those battles are, what outcomes we'd like to see, and think carefully about whether Mr. Obama factors into any of it. I would argue in the case of Wisconsin he does not.

22. We want to win the right to collectively bargain,
And most importantly the framing - states are broke because we stopped taxing the rich an passed freet trade.

His silence will be our loss, but at this point, i dint see him fighting on my side economically, except for lip service and toothless legislation.

24. PO has no interest in that. His silence only helps us. Look, the guy is
working for his corporate masters and at least he isn't a complete embarrassment when he stands up in front of crowds. He was certainly a better pick than the last one in that regard.

Whether he will do anything at all for workers - only crumbs and only if he can do it without anyone important really caring. Gays in the military for example. The Koch brothers are crazy and may care about that, but most rich folk could care less. Especially the computer geeks ... they just want their tax breaks.

He doesn't work for us. He doesn't fight for us. He needs to stay away so we can get this thing done.

So far the longer the 14 hold out and the more desperate Walker gets, the worse he looks.

19. Agree. Obama doesn't have the labor cred.......
to get into this. In addition as TBF said, this is NOT a partisan political issue. It's a labor/owners issue. Obama gets into it and it's portrayed as "politics as usual" and the people go back to sleep.

21. We need
A Union Appreciation thread. Heck how about a whole board of threads just for labor News and Labor issues? They are more necessary than ever IMO. The labor laws in this country that they fought hard for are enforced less and less.

It's time for labor to once again become a transformative force in this Country once again.
