Gaddafi's forces launched at least four air strikes on areas in and around the oil town of Ras Lanuf in east Libya, with one striking a residential area, Reuters reports.

"An air strike hit a house in a residential area of Ras Lanuf. There is a big hole in the ground floor of the two-storey home," Reuters correspondent Alexander Dziadosz said, adding that it was at least the fourth strike on Ras Lanuf on Tuesday.

"A massive plume of smoke and dust flew up in the area from the strike. Men rushed to the area shouting 'Allahu Akbar' (God is greatest)"

He said there were no reports of casualties in that strike.

'Al-Sharq Al-Awsat': Qadhafi Gets Help From Foreign Pilots

The London daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reported, citing sources in Libya, that Libyan ruler Mu'ammar Al-Qadhafi does not trust Libyan pilots and that pilots from Algeria, Syria, Serbia, Ukraine, and Romania have been hired as mercenaries to put down the demonstrations in the country.

Abd Al-Mun'im Al-Huni, representative of the anti-Qadhafi Libyan National Council in the Arab League, told the paper that he would demand an explanation from the Syrian representative to the Leage regarding Syrian fighters' involvement in putting down the protests in Libya.

A Syrian source said that the Syrian pilots are not fighting alongside Qadhafi's forces.

(Reuters) - Two Arab newspapers and al Jazeera television said Monday Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was looking for an agreement allowing him to step down, but there was no official confirmation of the reports.

It said Gaddafi made the proposal to the interim council, which speaks for mostly eastern areas controlled by his opponents. It quoted sources in the council as saying Gaddafi wanted guarantees of personal safety for him and his family and a pledge that they not be put on trial.

Al Jazeera said sources from the council told its correspondent in Benghazi that the offer was rejected because it would have amounted to an "honorable" exit for Gaddafi and would offend his victims.

Dwindling supplies of vehicle fuel in Benghazi and throughout eastern Libya were a rising concern for the rebel movement, the Dubai-based newspaper reported.

A spokesman for eastern Libya's rebel-controlled interim government, Tarek Bu Zaqiya, told the newspaper the region faced "severe shortages" of fuel soon.

While oil is still flowing in eastern Libya, regional refineries had cut crude processing, the report said.

Rebels were discussing plans to obtain imported fuel, including from Italian refineries, the report said.

A representative of Muammar Gaddafi offered talks with the rebel National Libyan Council on his exit but the council rejected it, Mustafa Gheriani, a rebel spokesman said.

I confirm that we received contact from a Gaddafi representative seeking to negotiate Gaddafi's exit. We rejected this. We are not negotiating with someone who spilled Libyan blood and continues to do so. Why would we trust the guy today?

Al Jazeera reports that the council said it may not pursue Gaddafi for crimes they accuse him of committing, if he steps down.

March 8, 2011 -- Updated 1157 GMT (1957 HKT)Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- Moammar Gadhafi is trying to strike a deal with opposition leaders, saying he will step down as Libya's leader if they can guarantee him safe passage out of the country and promise that neither he nor his family will face prosecution, an official with the opposition said Tuesday.

Musa Ibrahim, a government spokesman, vehemently disputed the claim saying reports of negotiations with the opposition are "lies."

Despite government denials, a member of the opposition says it has submitted counter-offers with several demands. Among them is a stipulation that Gadhafi has to immediately concede he is not the ruler of Libya, said Amal Bugaigis, a member of the opposition group called the February 17 Coalition.

It has been hard to get through to anyone in the city, but Libyan Murad Hamaima in Cairo told the BBC World Service his relatives in the city have told him on the phone that they “are under constant bombardement” and that some members of his family have been killed and others have been injured. Mr Hamaima, a former official in the Libyan Foreign Ministry who defected to the opposition, says it is his understanding that the rebels still control the centre of Zawiya. “But Gaddafi’s security forces, his militias, are everywhere in the streets, doing house-to-house searches and rounding up people.” Mr Hamaima also said there have been reports that rebels have captured several pro-government soldiers who said they had orders from Gaddafi to “take Zawiya at any price. it is supported by elite recruits from the Magariha Tribe which have been highly vetted for their obedience to Air Force superiors...

Although there have been issues with the fleet of fighter jets owned by Ghadafi, they are still relatively functional. One recent e.g

of the "ageing" fleet is when a Ghadafi Mig-23 fighter jet embarrassingly crashed while showing off stunts at the 3rd Expo at Mitiga.

Ghadafi's Air Force fleet includes just over 100 MiG-23 fighter jets,16-20 Mirage F-1 jets, 40-50 SU-22 fighter jets & enough bombs..

to last a lifetime and that is very worrying & many leading analysts agree that the recent use of the AF by Ghadafi is just a taste &

a deliberate strategical stance indicating his proclaimed will of fighting to the end and if he looses then he will go down fighting.

And as the NFZ prospects (China Objects) loom anybody who knows Ghadafi will tell you how much he hates the American Air Force a true

disaster is in the making and unfortunately it is inevitable. Like with all major predicaments in life, there is just one solution...

we need to locate these jets and put them out of service or at least destroy the bomb and artillery depots. These two actions will...

prove to be highly beneficial to both the revolutionaries & the innocent civilians who are not fighting in the front lines. Now where

are these 200 or so fighter jets? Where are these tens of thousands of Air Force Bombs kept? Where do these Air Force Personal live?

These are just some of the questions that spring to mind at this juncture and I am sad to say I dont have the answers but some one...

you might know will definitely know the answers to those questions. What I do know is there are defected AF personal who can share...

a lot of up to date information on Ghadafi's fleet and it's where abouts and the 20,000 or so ready to give Ghadafi his wish of CW...

it will take at least a month for the UN to agree a NFZ & by this time if you organise your brave men U can take out G AF capability

Guerrilla warfare is what Ghadafi wants U to do but U need 2 be proactively strategical, it only needs a few trucks to few locations!

If you don't want a civil war than you have to nip Ghadafi's power base at the bud. All this ground offensive has turned you 2 rebels

40. Guardian briefs on Ras Lanuf, Az Zawiyah:

1pm < (6 AM EST) >: Here's a summary of events so far today:

• There have been multiple airstrikes in the eastern oil port of Ras Lanuf, held by the opposition. AP reports that there have been five airstrikes. Some appear to be aimed at opposition lines but at least one hit a residential area, according to Reuters, which said a house was struck. Al-arabiya reported that bombs were dropped on two hotels used by foreign journalists and that a block of flats was hit. There have been no casualties reported from the airstrikes so far.

• In the west of the country, Zawiyah, 50km from Tripoli, has come under fierce attack from Gaddafi forces and the government claims to have retaken the city, although that could not be confirmed. A Libyan exile in contact with someone in the city said fighting was ongoing and Zawiyah was not under Gaddafi's control yet. Government forces have reportedly been using tanks and have destroyed buildings including hospitals. Al-Jazeera said the city is surrounded by troops loyal to the Libyan leader.
