More Airstrikes on Libya Rebels at Ras Lanouf

Updated 9:15 a.m. ET, March 8

Libyan government forces pounded the oil port of Ras Lanouf with fresh airstrikes Tuesday, with warplanes hitting at least five sites in the area. The strikes are part of a renewed effort to beat rebels back by air as they push westward on the ground trying to reach the capital of Tripoli. The airstrikes are also targeting a main highway toward Tripoli. The openness of the terrain has put rebel fighters at a disadvantage against the government's airpower.

Thirty miles from Tripoli, there are witness reports that loyalists of Moammar Gadhafi have retaken the city of Zawiya after a barrage of artillery and that government tanks could be seen in the streets. Unlike the progressive momentum in favor of the opposition seen in uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, there has been a growing stalemate in Libya as fighting extends to a third week and anti-government fighters battle for territory.

The bloody crackdown has left other world powers scrambling to formulate a response to the crisis. The opposition has called for an internationally imposed no-fly zone, and while Britain and France have said they are drafting one for the U.N. Security Council, Russia has said it would oppose it and has the veto power to do so. NATO boosted so-called surveillance flights over the country, but while President Obama has said the United States was considering "potential military options," no direct intervention appears imminent.

The upheaval has also raised concern over spiking oil prices. Libya normally produces more than 1.5 million barrels of oil a day.

9. Benghazi's Tahrir Square has seen its first wedding ceremony...
3.21pm: Benghazi's Tahrir Square has seen its first wedding ceremony since the start of the uprising, al Arabiya reports:

Faisal, the groom, does not find it strange to marry in such circumstances and thinks that his ceremony will not be the last.

"Come everyday to the square and you will witness more wedding ceremonies," he told Al Arabiya.

The bride's father, Ali Saleh, agrees with his son-in-law and expects joy to spread all over Libya.

Followers of the Guardian's Middle East blogs over the past few weeks might recall an an Egyptian couple marrying in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the heart of the Egyptians' revolution.

Revolutionary Council said that they would only accept it if Gaddafi stepped down in 72 hours, etc. renounce leadership, and maybe wouldn't be prosecuted domestically. Really, that's how it should end.

It was reported poorly throughout the night last night. :(

But glad to know the full facts now.

22. EGYPT: Cairo "million woman march" turning ugly...
From The Guardian's News Blog:

3.42pm - Egypt:

There are signs that a "million woman march" being held in Cairo to coincide with International Women's Day is turning ugly. Women are demanding female input on the drafting of Egypt's constitution (the committee drawing up amendments is all male) and legislative changes that will guarantee complete gender equality but there is a counterprotest.

@pakinammer is tweeting from the protest. Here's a selection from her recent updates:

A guy now is schooling us on how women should stay home and raise men who can become presidents =) #Tahrir

A physical scuffle broke out now now. I think I'm leaving. This can get disgusting, easily. #Tahrir #Women #Protests

One man, carried on shoulders, shouting: "A woman's place is her house." Some women arguing back. No point if you ask me. #Tahrir #Sick

Also tweeting is @ElFoulio

Three women attacked, army stepped in

This is fucking disgusting

The counter-protesters attacked the womens' march

Hundreds rally in West Bank, Gaza for Women's Day

Palestinian women took to the streets on Tuesday to call for unity and an end to the Israeli occupation in a series of rallies called to mark International Women's Day.

In Gaza City, around 500 women waving Palestinian flags marched through the city centre demanding an end to the political division between the rival Palestinian factions, Fatah and Hamas, an AFP correspondent said.

Holding banners calling for equality and justice for Palestinian women, they marched from the Square of the Unknown Soldier past the parliament building and on to the headquarters of the United Nations in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

"No to division, yes to national unity," they chanted in a rally which passed off peacefully.

Doctor from Ras Lanouf: More than 20 injured so far. The majority in critical condition. #Libya #Feb17

Al Jazeera Live Call from Ras Lanouf. We translate to you the full update from the doctor:
18:11 Heavy clashes at the borders of Ban Jwad. Revolutionaries moved to ban Jwad after noon and have been shelled with (more) heavy artillery that they have been shelled with before. Tens of injured arriving at Ras Lanouf in Bin Jwad

1812 More than 20 injured so far in Ras Lanouf. The majority in critical condition. We cannot accept more than 5 cases in one go.

1813 Our medical teams are split into 5 teams. Each time is working on one case. Each time has a surgeon, an anaesthetist.

1813 We are in a difficult condition right now! If this type of bombardment continues, we will NOT be able to support the newly injured whatosoever.

1814 We are still suffering from medical supplies. This hospital resides in a small town. We are not a city. Ras Lanuf is not a city.

1814 The majority of medical supplies have come from the cititzens of Libya

1815 We we receive serious cases that we cannot handle, we send them east to Ajdabiya which is 200km away!

1816 We are fearing for our safety as we are the only medical team here

1816 We received cases where the injured have had whole body parts blown off

Rebels will not pursue Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi over crimes they say he has committed if he steps down from his post in the next 72 hours, the head of the rebel National Libyan Council has told Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera speaks to Mustafa Abdel Jalil, head of the opposition National Council, about the deadline he has set Libya’s embattled leader.

What Human Rights Activists? This better not be HRW sticking their nose in things, not after their past support of Gaddafi.

'People are dying': Outgunned Libya rebels pounded

Gadhafi's tanks, missiles bombard opposition; his forces may have seized city near Tripoli

NBC, msnbc.com and news services
updated 51 minutes ago 2011-03-08T15:59:44

Moammar Gadhafi's forces used tanks and fired rockets to bombard rebels on the frontline between east and west Libya, according to rebels who complained they could not match the Libyan leader's fire-power.

"People are dying out there. Gadhafi's forces have rockets and tanks," shouted Abdel Salem Mohamed, 21, returning to Ras Lanuf from the front.

...

'Shot on sight'

Government artillery also pounded Zawiya, the closest rebel-held city to the capital Tripoli as trapped residents cowered from the onslaught, witnesses said.

...

"The city is in ruins," he said. "Some buildings have been entirely destroyed and everyone on the street is shot on sight. There are many wounded but the hospitals are running out of supplies," he said.

The Associated Press, Reuters and NBC News contributed to this report.

When media like NBC has watered down reports of the atrocities in Libya, compared to Sky News, the Guardian, and even CNN, this supports why.
