Shale Lifts Prospects in Ohio

Struggling Region Begins to Cash In as Oil Firms Rush to Buy Drilling Rights

WINDHAM, Ohio — An oil-rich underground layer of rock, called the Utica Shale, has sparked a leasing frenzy and the prospect of a new flow of cash and jobs to a development-starved corner of the Rust Belt.

Chesapeake Energy Corp. and other oil companies have swarmed this northeast Ohio hamlet and others nearby, buying mineral-rights leases to drill into what the company and some analysts say might be one of the U.S.'s last big unconventional oil fields yet to be developed on a commercial scale. Chesapeake said it has spent about $1 billion acquiring mineral rights on more than a million acres from public and private landowners...

Mr.(Gov.) Kasich, who took office in January, appointed a former oil-field-services executive, David Mustine, to head Ohio's natural-resources department. Among that agency's tasks is to study whether there is a way to make drilling legal in state parks—a proposal that has riled environmental groups.

....Local oil and gas attorney Eric Johnson says some of his clients have already reaped life-altering rewards from the leases. One farmer in Ohio's poverty stricken Appalachian region pocketed nearly $1 million for selling drilling rights to his land, Mr. Johnson said. If the play pans out, even more money could pour into Ohio via royalties, typically 12.5% per barrel of oil.

Question is were they told of fracking issues? Not one mention of any of that in this article. I hope they don't live to regret their decision. I admit it would be hard to turn the money down in such hard times. Maybe they can just move away like the Mayor in TX did when his son developed nose bleeds so bad it didn't stop - see article link:

1. Nosebleeds caused by fracking?
That seems pretty far fetched.

4. Oh really? I guess as far fetched as all the earthquakes in Arkansas?
'Fracking' Disposal Sites Suspended, Likely Linked To Arkansas Earthquakes

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/06/fracking-arkansas-earthquakes_n_831633.html

..The commission says there is likely a link between the wells and the earthquakes. There have been more than 800 quakes in the area in the past six months and a magnitude 4.7 quake – the strongest in Arkansas in 35 years – hit there Sunday.

The high-pressure wells are used to dispose of waste water from natural gas drilling.

......

Yep far fetched.

7. That pretty much proves the psychosis, thanks!

Fracking=bad... therefore, anything else that's "bad" that happens in close proximity (in time or space), must be caused by the fracking.

Illogic bordering on irrationality.

9. Worst earthquakes in 35 years was just a coincidence? I think you need to learn more about this.
Here's a good start:

.....

Oh by the way VP Cheney had a lot to do with this issue:

What is the FRAC Act?

The FRAC Act (Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness to Chemical Act) is a House bill intended to repeal the Halliburton Loophole and to require the natural gas industry to disclose the chemicals they use.

11. I didn't say that it was a coincidence
There isn't enough evidence at this point to draw a conclusion, but it's at least plausible.

My point was that drawing a parallel between something that was at least plausibly connected (drilling/earthquakes) as proof that an entirely different connection (fracking causing nosebleeds) was therefore plausible is just silly.

Fracking is not more likely to cause nosebleeds just because you think there's causation with earthquakes... nor is it more likely to cause nosebleeds just because you don't like fracking.

If fracking continues apace, you might want to move to another planet.

19. Here's a great article on that which talks about Cheney's hand in it back in 2005:

Why Dick Cheney Sticks to Bottled Water
by Michael Brune on October 15, 2010

http://ecopolitology.org/2010/10/15/why-dick-cheney-sticks-to-bottled-water/

Americans should be able to drink what comes out of their taps without worrying that it will make them sick. So why would anyone insert a loophole into the Safe Drinking Water Act that subverts that basic right?

If you can't guess the answer, a quick history refresher should tip you off.

In 2005, Congress passed an Energy Act that included (thanks to meddling by former Halliburton CEO Dick Cheney) an exemption for hydraulic fracturing (fracking) from the protections of the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Clean Air Act. It's called the "Halliburton loophole" and it's a whopper.

Fracking, which I wrote about in August, involves injecting a pressurized mix of water, sand, and highly toxic chemicals directly into gas-rich shale formations. If you combine fracking with horizontal drilling (something that Halliburton pioneered shortly before getting its loophole), you can get exponentially more gas from shale formations, which means exponentially more profit. The U.S. has some very, very big shale formations so, even by Halliburton standards, we're talking about a lot of money.

20. The Halliburton exception is worth billions of dollars in profits, and health risks!!
Somehow, making the planet unlivable just is not in their equation, given the end days are so near.
