6. Dolphins should be around too...
My first thought was migrating birds and dolphins pushing them toward the shore. We found a baby shark on Huntington Beach last Saturday... just one... a baby... regular ol' circle of life stuff. Hard to see though.

5. A crash in dissolved oxygen (DO) from so many fish concentrated
in a small area causes suffocation. It happens with tightly schooling species like sardines, anchovies, and herring species like menhaden. The DO may have already been depressed from man-made influences, and when the fish into the low DO area it crashed to a lethal level. Not an uncommon occurrence.

10. I believe you are correct!
The cause is so far a mystery. It appears the fish may have died due to lack of oxygen, Keenan said.

But residents said they weren't aware of any red tides, an algae bloom that sucks oxygen out of the water, or other issues that could have caused such a massive killing.

14. yeah the fish were really booming this weekend
a lot of people said you could see large schools of them in the marina Sunday. A lot of sea birds in the marina as well. In rainy years Redondo can get red tides, although I didn't notice any near shore. It is not uncommon in the area.

9. They look more like white croaker to us.
Possibly mackerel or sardine, but anchovy? They look a little too large to be anchovies to us, (as we see them on local TV news).

After having talked to some biologists right now it's thought that, for whatever reason these fish became trapped in the harbour, lack of oxygen would be the likely cause of this massive fish die-off. Why they became trapped in the harbour is a mystery right now. The BF has calls out to see if extra help is needed. Water quality readings and samples will be collected along with some dead fish for posting.

These fish will need to get cleared out very soon for obvious reasons.

11. Omigod, that's my home town!
I wasn't born there but I graduated from Redondo Union High School and I've always considered it my home. I have a good friend who used to fish there too. This is absolutely heartbreaking.

The fish simply got in its way.
