Day care gives granddad wrong boy. Granddad didn't notice either
Police: Day care gives granddad wrong boy

CLEVELAND — Cleveland police say a man picking up his 3-year-old grandson from day care was given the wrong child and didn't realize the mistake until he got the boy home.

WEWS-TV reports that when that child's mother came to pick up her son, staffers at the Fatima Family Center knew something was wrong. By that time, the grandfather was on his way back with the boy.

The day care is operated by Catholic Charities Community Services. Executive Director Bernadette Washington released a statement saying her organization would review its procedures and make sure the staff understands how to release a child to the proper person.

Washington also told WJW-TV the two children on Thursday were safe with their right relatives within a half-hour of the mix-up.

1. I wonder if he walked or drove to pick up the boy
He shouldn't have a driver's license.

16. +1. I'm guessing Grampa about had a heart attack when he finally looked as his grandson and realized
the mistake. I agree he needs to get his vision and mental acuity checked.

6. Because it feeds the meme:
YOU CHILDREN ARE ALWAYS IN DANGER!

Thanks MSM. It used to be that such stories would be relegated to the last two minutes of a local newscast.

9. Because it is really sad that Grampa didn't recognize his grandson.
I think that is quite unusual. Now if he'd picked up the correct kid, that wouldn't be news.

26. You seem to care a lot Hannah.
Rich or poor grandparents generally recognize their grandkids. And anything that requires police will end up on the blotter which will get picked up and distributed throughout the news. Newspapers have always been full of little one or two line stories that people vaguely read, say "how about that" and move on. No real point to it I guess.

I recall my son being put on a bus to an afterschool daycare when he was in kindergarten. Only problem was he didn't go to daycare. Needless to say, my head exploded until he was located and that was the scare of a lifetime for me.

17. The same thing happened once when I worked in a dog kennel.
It was funny and scary at the same time. This probably would never happen when I worked in a day care. We were very careful about knowing "Bobby is getting picked up by grandpa today."

18. I believe there was a misprint in the story
One line read:

Washington also told WJW-TV the two children on Thursday were safe with their right relatives within a half-hour of the mix-up.

It should have read:

Washington also told WJW-TV the two children on Thursday were safe with their right relatives within a half-hour of mixed drinks.

20. I don’t blame grandpa
It’s Cleveland; it’s cold there, Day care staff put a coat and hat on a little boy and said goodbye. Grandpa looked at kid without really seeing face of kid but thought it looked like the right coat. It wasn’t until kid refused to respond to his name that Grandpa started to realize the mix-up. this wouldn’t have happened in the middle of summer

Edited on Tue Mar-08-11 07:35 PM by TK421
Grandpa: "Well....how's your sister doin"?
Kid: "Sister"?
Grandpa: "Yeah...Amelia...how old is she now"?
Kid: "Who's Amelia"?
Grandpa: "Whats the matter with you boy? you got Alzheimer's already? and why is your hair straight instead of curly? and how come you couldn't recognize me when I came to pick you up?"
Kid: "I don't know...I guess I just..."
Grandpa: "Kids these days....wait a minute....I don't even have a granddaughter named Amelia ( scratching his head )...who the FUCK ARE YOU"?
