Gasoline prices will reach an average of $3 a gallon for the first Christmas ever.
Los Angeles Times

Crude oil prices closed above $90 a barrel for the first time in two years, raising the likelihood that U.S. gasoline prices will reach an average of $3 a gallon for the first Christmas ever.

California already far surpassed that point this season — the average pump price was $3.28 Wednesday, according to the U.S. Energy Department. Experts said it's heading for $4 and more in parts of the state.

The rising gas prices have experts worried about how the slow-recovering economy could be affected.

8. Outlook not so good
And I don't need an eight ball to tell me so. We had better start drilling because there is no alternative in the near future. We need oil until that future day gets here.

24. I'm serious that we need oil until we have alternatives
If there is another way to get it without drilling or paying $300.00/keg to the Arabs etc then I'm fine with that. Without energy solution NOW, food and other necessities will become unavailable or priced beyond normal humans. As usual, the poorest will be hardest hit.

We should start now with building alternatives but we MUST use oil until we have said alternatives. Facts can be hard to swallow.

25. Thanks and as for healing a junkie...
You don't just cut them off because it can kill them or make them miserable. We don't have methadone or suboxone for oil addiction so we MUST use oil until we have similar. I can't understand how an intelligent person would think we can keep the goods moving without oil until an alternative is in place.

18. It just topped $3 in most of the nation
I realize California and most of the West Coast have always been higher than the rest of the nation.

Price are skyrocketing. I am sure that $3 here equates to near $4 or higher on the West Coast.

19. If we ever get anywhere near a full employment economy again
it will likely be between $5-6 a gallon. I'm filling up tomorrow, perhaps it will be my last under three dollar a gallon purchase (in NJ).

22. Don't expect it to get any cheaper.
The unusually cold weather in much of the Northern hemisphere is driving higher prices. So is economic recovery and rising demand. There are signs that peak oil production may have already occurred; rising demand for oil means the price will inevitably go up given competition for a limited resource.
