Idaho Governor to sign legislation stripping teachers of collective bargaining
and seniority.

Idaho bill would take away power of teachers union

Wednesday, March 9, 2011; 1:24 AM

BOISE, Idaho -- A bill that would phase out tenure for new teachers and restrict collective bargaining on their salaries and benefits is on its way to the Idaho governor.

The GOP-backed measure cleared its final hurdle Tuesday in the state Legislature, where it passed the Idaho House on a 48-22 vote. Nine Republicans crossed party lines to oppose the bill.

The state's teachers union, the Idaho Education Association, says it would gut teacher rights. It plans to protest Wednesday.

Supporters say the plan will give more power to Idaho's locally elected school boards in labor relations issues. Opponents say it's a slap in the face to teachers and a mean-spirited move to dismantle their union.

BOISE -- Hundreds of teachers, students, parents and union activists circled the Idaho Capitol in Boise in a human chain to protest education reforms now progressing to Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter's desk for signing.

Protesters at Wednesday's event wore red cloth strips over their mouths.

Kelly Richmond, a history teacher at Boise's North Junior High School, said the cloth was to symbolize that teachers "voices had been silenced."

Earlier Wednesday, the Republican-dominated House passed a pay-for-performance plan for teachers that is opposed by the Idaho Education Association teacher's union.

One of the teachers interviewed said "we have one more chance" when the bill hits the Governor's desk. Anyone familiar with Butch Otter (his real name!) knows better, unfortunately.

4. I can hardly talk about it.
My state sux.
No one cares here.
They blame the unions.
They blame Obama.
They blame the Democrats.

Yet, they vote for Republicans religiously, like a cult.
Year in, year out, every single election.
