Israel may ask U.S. for $20 billion more in security aid, Barak says

Defense Minister tells Wall Street Journal that Israel must be on guard considering the unrest sweeping the Arab world, adding increased aid could help make Israel a 'stabilizer in such a turbulent region'.

-snip-

He also told the WSJ that a top Egyptian official recently warned him that the new government in Cairo was likely to change its attitude toward Israel unless the latter made serious efforts for peace with the Palestinians.

-snip-

The prime minister is said to be planning a speech - possibly to be delivered in Washington - in which he will outline his plans.

20 billion "could help make Israel a 'stabilizer'

well that's a laugh and a half

(mods: I've put this thread here as it pertains to OUR money and what's done with it)

1. Don't they have national health care?
I think I read somewhere that they did. I guess if we pay for their military they can afford it.

2. They're a wealthy nation
they don't have a national debt that threatens to cripple them.

Maybe they could pick up the slack.

3. $20 BILLION (with a "b") to Israel instead of to build/repair roads,
pay for childrens' vaccines, prenatal care, afterschool reading programs . . . .

Yeah, we're broke, don't have the money. Must cut social programs. But always have spare change for friends.

4. Translation...
...we need to funnel 20 billion to our poor neglected defense industry. Times are tough in the bullets and bombs industry.

After all, "welfare" is for kings, not queens...

8. People homeless/hungry in the US, national debt skyrocketing, roads
and bridges all over the US in disrepair, old/infirm people doing without adequate heat this winter - what the heck, give someone else a few billion, we don't need no stinking billions. The US might waste it stuff like raises to CEOs and/or members of congress.
