Muslim Brotherhood blames ousted regime for sectarian tension
Staff
Wed, 09/03/2011 - 12:39

...

Violent clashes erupted yesterday between hundreds of Copts and Salafis in the Zarayeb area of Moqattam, which led to the injury of 51 people and the deaths of at least ten Christians and Muslims.

...

In a statement released Tuesday, the Muslim Brotherhood accused the remaining members of the ousted regime of attempting to ignite sectarian tensions to destroy national unity.

"These people are operating under the principle of "divide to conquer" and have incited a group of Muslim extremists to bring up other sectarian issues, which should not be discussed at present," the statement read.

...

The Brotherhood called on Egyptians to listen to the voice of reason and put the interests of the country ahead of their personal or professional interests.

1) Gaddafi shipped people who are loyal to him from Sirte, Sabha, and liberated areas to #Tripoli and put them in hotels surrounding..

2) Green square. These hotels only allow Libyan State TV channels and people see them day in day out. These people take it in turns to..

3) Go down and "celebrate" and cheer in green square. There are 3 shifts, each of them cheer for 6 hours each. So when one group is...

4) In the green square, the others rest or sleep. When there is a big event however, they all go down. They number roughly 20,000 #libya

Libya's helicopter forces are greatest threat, U.S. Marine chief says
By Jennifer Rizzo, CNN National Security Producer
March 9, 2011 -- Updated 0523 GMT (1323 HKT)

At a committee hearing Tuesday, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James F. Amos said he thought Libya's helicopters were its greatest threat.

Washington (CNN) -- Libya's helicopter forces are its greatest threat, the head of the Marine Corps said Tuesday.
Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, asked Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James F. Amos about Libya's air capabilities during a committee hearing held to discuss the Navy's portion of the 2012 Defense budget request.
"I think it's modest," Amos responded. "I think probably their greatest threat are their helicopter-type forces."
Helicopters would be more difficult to target if the international community set up a no-fly zone. Such a zone would typically be enforced by fighter jets whose speed and altitude make it difficult to target helicopters, which move low and slow.

45. What an odd report
Starts out with Amos speaking authoritatively, then has him stating he doesn't know how many aircraft the Libyan government has. He goes on to say that the helicopters are the most dangerous. McCain asked if it would make a difference and Amos responds he doesn't know.

The whole statement, muddled as it is, is then contradicted by some data from Jane's, stating that the Libyan AF has only few dozen 30 year-old attack helicopters operated by poorly trained crews.

The only good bit was the ending:
"You have been getting regular briefings?" McCain asked Amos. Amos said he had.

Fire that bonehead. There is better under-employed, ex-military talent in DU. At least they'd do their fucking homework.

Saudi ferment, and a king’s choice

Christoph Wilcke, 9 March 2011

Subjects:International politics Democracy and government Civil society Saudi Arabia middle east democracy & power politics of protest institutions & government globalisation

Saudi Arabia’s ruling family is seeking to mollify discontent by spending some of its vast wealth. But that approach fails to meet the aspirations of a changing society, says Christoph Wilcke.
Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah will not have to break his piggy-bank to make good on his promise to hand out $36 billion to Saudi citizens. With foreign reserves of over $440 billion, and oil prices at over $100 a barrel, any such rainy day remains distant.

But it is unlikely that cash bundles will satisfy Saudis’ demands. The king needs to spend political capital. Saudi youth have become politically mobilised and are demanding changes to the archaic and absolute rule of the Al Saud family. They want a say in their country’s public affairs.

...

The platforms of Saudi mobilisation in 2011 are, as elsewhere in the Arab world, Facebook and Twitter. During the king’s recent three-month medical leave, the government was paralysed as a mesmerised population followed the unfolding popular upheavals in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen, and Libya. Khalid al-Tuwaijiri, the chief of the royal court, even opened a Facebook page to allow citizens to present their views (it was quickly oversubscribed). Saudi youth set up their own Facebook pages under the banner: “The people demand reform of the regime.”

...

But amid this pattern of constraint, something new has occurred: Saudis have broken the wall of silence and fear. The reasonableness of their demands is reflected in a Facebook letter to the king on 23 February: a review of basic laws, an elected parliament, a constitutional court, human-rights protection and promotion of women.

Wave of change in the Arab world - the European position
The EU will provide 6,000 million to democratization in Africa
Brussels proposes a new relationship to enhance basic rights
RICARDO MARTÍNEZ DE rituerto - Brussels - 09/03/2011

Morally forced to make Atonement for his proven connivance with authoritarian and corrupt regimes of southern Mediterranean, the European Union intends to give a new democratic approach to the relationship with those neighbors. The instrument will be a partnership for democracy and the shared prosperity approved yesterday by the Commission and glosada by José Manuel Durão Barroso as a catalyst for the democratic transformation of the region. The plan, with 6,000 million euros at stake, will be discussed Friday by European leaders, who expected that they affect the conditionality of support: aid will be related to the strength of the advances in human rights and democracy.
