FBI breakthrough in MLK bomb probe to be announced

A major development in the investigation into the bomb planted along the planned route of the Martin Luther King Jr. Unity March in downtown Spokane is expected to be announced today.

Frank Harrill, supervisory resident senior agent in the Spokane office of the FBI, would not comment this morning on the status of the case.

But The Spokesman-Review has learned that dozens of FBI agents from across the Northwest began assembling in Spokane earlier this week following a significant breakthrough in the federal investigation.

Previously, federal officials had called the bomb a thwarted attempt at domestic terrorism and said the investigation would likely turn on forensic testing of the bomb, which had been sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation lab in Quantico, Va.
