Today is Wednesday! That's why they ordered the Army to retake Zawiya "by Wednesday". People were wondering what was so special about Wednesday. It was for this dog and pony show.

We’ve added a calendar to the site!
Posted on March 9, 2011 by Admin

So it struck us that with 866 posts, it’s going to prove a mission for people to find exactly what they’re after. Time is of the essence in the times and events that we’re currently living through, and getting to the information that you want and need when you need it is even more important.

We’ve recently gone back through our archive and have properly tagged every post (a few may have gotten away, but we’ll get to them) after which we added the tag cloud on the right hand column. Today we have added the calendar widget which will allow you to jump to any day and browse its events as they happened. We’ve endeavored to be as thorough as possible so you should find everything documented and archived.

We hope this is helpful to you and we thank you for your continued visits and participation.

Peace!

10. Guerilla Warfare Tactics for Defeating Night-vision Equipment

Guerilla Warfare Tactics for Defeating Night-vision Equipment

Dealing with enemy troops using thermal imaging + image intensification equipment in guerilla warfare-especially in desert conditions

(Note: the information here has been compiled from US and UK army reports and studies. VERY IMPORTANT- I have found no manuals on tactics to neutralize night-vision equipment or experiences relating to this by conventional armies, such as an evaluation of the Iraqi Army's experiences against US and British troops and especially none with the experiences of guerilla armies in desert conditions. This is new ground. In Libya, therefore, I ask rebels to review this critically and evaluate the tactics themselves based on the information here.)

...

Guerilla attacks are based on surprise hit-and-run tactics, quick attack and rapid escape delivering maximum damage and losses, while preserving ones maximum forces. Night time attacks are especially terrifying for the enemy and serve to exhaust them, leaving them sleepless and unnerved. The guerilla attempts to use the daytime to replenish his strength as much as possible, unless there are good opportunities or unavoidable reasons to fight. Night time actions prepare the way for more extensive daylight actions and the guerilla forces should be divided into those fighting in the night and those defending in the day.

Faced with superior fire power, guerillas aim to progressively diminish enemy forces by repeated attacks, which can either weaken the enemy in preparation for a large-scale offensive and/or coincide with a large urban uprising which is, in fact, the only way to ultimately achieve victory. Guerilla warfare, whether urban or in the country should always be an adjunct to mass struggle not a substitute for it.

Good planning is the obvious starting point for effectively degrade or neutralize night vision equipment. Using the terrain, planning a point from which to organize an attack and how to coordinate tactics, especially when attacking from different directions. Since the maximum range of both image enhancers and thermal goggles are limited, forces can group themselves at positions no less than 150 metres from enemy lines to be safe.

The Journey of taking over Ras Lanuf. | @feb17voices
on MARCH 9, 2011

http://boo.fm/b297269

AUDIO

When we reached Ras Elmengar, God was generous to us. Around sunset time, there was a sandstorm that came. The sky darkened and the people turned off their cars and we began to creep forward little by little and we reinforced ourselves with the weapons from El Henaya, and the ones that we found at the factory at Ar Rajma.

There became a division inside of the battalion in Ras Lanuf. But we before we reached Ras Lanuf they were shooting from a mountain, the mountain that I told you about, Ras Elmengar, in which you used to hide his weapons from America in 86 and where he hides lots of different confidential items. When we reached the mountain, of course before this mountain there was an exposed area. They started to shoot us from the top of this mountain.

Around sunset time the revolutionaries where able to control this mountain, and they began to retreat and there was a division between the people in the barracks. They had given the people orders to attack us, and some people had refused these orders and they were executed inside the barracks. From about 18 to 20 people from the tribe of Furjan where executed. And these are details from the inside, they are confirmed 200% accurate. So the battalion split in two and that’s what helped us get inside.

If this hadn’t happened, if the Furjan hadn’t separated and the Colonel, I forget his name…around sunset time when they could see that there were probably about 5000 people or maybe 6000 people from Ajdabya and Benghazi, the youth from Ajdabya and Benghazi could be seen all together united. And it became the end, and many of them retreated and he had given some people weapons and some of these people came against him. Even if it wasn’t him individually who came them weapons other people did, for example the tribes of Alaraibat in Ras Lanuf he wouldn’t give them weapons.

There are tribes that he wouldn’t give weapons. There are other specific tribes he did give weapons, like Hsun. Hsun and Wlad Wafi, he gave them weapons so that they would stand with him and thats what happened and they tricked us. When we reached Ras Lanuf, we asked from some of the youth who are very energetic, we give them information and they spread that information to the rest, that we don’t want to go in on the residents.

That we don’t want to attack the residents, because the people in the region had been given this idea that the revolutionaries want to attack people’s homes and attack the residents. Muammar Gaddafi had given them this idea, he had separated any communications between us and them as if there was some type of obstacle between us. He had given them this idea that we wanted to attack the people and we take their women and their homes and their money. To the point that when we reached none of the residents were there except for a tiny percentage of the population, like the family of Alarabiat.

We reached Ras Lanuf and we liberated the battalion, many of them escaped and we found mounds of weapons, missiles inside the barracks. And these we took for the youth of the revolutionaries in case of any new battles. And we the revolutionaries are determined, we set our sights on Gaddafi’s headquarters, Bab Al Azizia, and we are not interested in the towns along the way.

Why the international community is powerless with Libya

Those who reject the ICC but refer others to it — China, India, Russia, the U.S. — violate natural justice and are guilty of gross hypocrisy

By Ramesh Thakur, Ottawa March 9, 2011 3:02 PM

...

The ICC statute provides for non-state-party nationals to be referred to it by the Security Council. Non-ICC Council members — China, India, Russia, the US — can vote to refer others to the court: an egregious example of double standards and hypocrisy in breach of natural justice. Many of the most influential countries voting to refer Libya to the ICC refused to back the Goldstone Report into Israel’s actions in Gaza with matching robustness.

The hypocrisy is worsened by the common perception that Western leaders guilty of the crime of aggression against Iraq, and Western commanders who may be guilty of war crimes in Iraq — cue Fallujah — and Afghanistan (drone strikes may violate international humanitarian law) are not in the international criminal dock.

There is little likelihood that those who sold arms to Gadhafi, that are now trained on the people, will be called to criminal account either.

Thus the ICC has been subverted into a tool of the powerful to be used only against the others, which is a perversion of the principle of justice and the rule of law that is meant to be impartially applied to all and put the weak and the strong, the rich and the poor, on equal footing.

...

The material in this gas makes people convulse for hours. It paralyses them. They couldn't move at all. We tried to give them oxygen but it didn't work," said Amaar Nujaim, a field doctor who works for Islamic Relief.

"We are seeing symptoms in the patient's nerves, not in their respiratory systems. I'm 90 per cent sure its nerve gas and not tear gas that was used," said Sami Zaid, a doctor at the Science and Technology Hospital in Sanaa.

Mohammad Al-Sheikh, a pathologist at the same hospital, said that some of the victims had lost their muscular control and were forced to wear diapers.

"We have never seen tear gas cause these symptoms. We fear it may be a dangerous gas that is internationally forbidden," Al-Sheikh said.

#Yemen. Oh yeah, the place where they're using our weapons and joking with us about it.

The WikiLeaks revelation making the rounds in the Yemeni capital Sana'a is the one where President Ali Abdullah Saleh, in an apparently jovial conversation with U.S. General David Petraeus, offers to lie to his countrymen about the perpetrators of drone strikes in the Yemeni countryside. "We'll continue saying the bombs are ours, not yours," Saleh said at the January meeting, according to a cable sent by the American ambassador at the time, Stephen Seche. The cable also reports that Saleh complained of drugs and weapons smuggling from Djibouti across the Red Sea, but stated he was content to have whiskey bootlegged in, "provided it's good whiskey."

Yemen: Wikileaks cable corroborates evidence of US airstrikes

A leaked diplomatic cable has corroborated images released earlier this year by Amnesty International showing that the US military carried out a missile strike in south Yemen in December 2009 that killed dozens of local residents.

In the secret cable from January 2010 published by the organization Wikileaks, Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh is reported as having assured US General David Petraeus that his government would “continue saying the bombs are ours, not yours”.

According to the cable, this prompted Yemeni Deputy Prime Minister Rashad al-‘Alimi “to joke that he had just ‘lied’ by telling Parliament that the bombs in Arhab, Abyan, and Shebwa were American-made but deployed by the ROYG ”.

“The cable appears to confirm Amnesty International’s finding that the Abyan strike was carried out by the US military, not Yemeni government forces,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

State TV is “trying to trick people” to make them think nothing is happening in #Libya.

on FEBRUARY 22, 2011

http://boo.fm/b286243

AUDIO

Yesterday, there was a funny show. They brought, of course, people to bring evidence that what happened was just some kids playing and some people from Egypt and Tunisia… (who) are planning a plot against our government and our people. And then they brought people who were saying, yes okay, and one guy who was talking about the casualties and they gave numbers but it’s all like amateur work, where you see a lot of contradiction, even in the talk between themselves. It was really…I hear all the friends who were talking about that talk show…it’s like a joke, they’re still playing the same songs like they do before.

It’s like they never learned the lesson or they are trying to trick the people again, to make them think that okay, we are okay and there’s nothing happening really, like it’s just young kids who try to burn the police stations, and to burn the police records, and to steal from the cars, and to horrify the people. They never talk about that there are people who want their rights, or to want to have a democratic government, or they don’t want Gaddafi at all. That’s not an option and that’s not discussed at all. They only talk about how all of this was a plot and Gaddafi is still a good leader and is the leader and everything is fine, except when we take care of these kids, we will be ok.

22:39 European Parliament urges the recognising of the Libyan Transitional Council as legitimate. There is currently no consensus amongst all the EU countries to recongise the council’s legitimacy.

46. I very much understand the sentiment. However, those high prices translate into suffering for poor
people in the U.S. Many lose jobs because of it, and grocery prices go up, causing even MORE hunger!

We aren't ALL driving hummers......

Had to do a moment of silence for them.

Western leaders, I would not interfere. When Libyans get pissed, they mean PISSED.

Tweet shortly deleted afterwards.

Egyptian Army and Thugs clear Tahrir Square with force
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fomn5Mm-Lwc

Today protesters in Tahrir Square, Cairo, Egypt, were attacked by the army and men in civillian clothes, who many say are paid thugs. At least fifteen were injured (probably many more). The army and the thugs then destoyed the tent city that the protesters had been staying in.

As an Egyptian journalist said to me today, telling people the army isn't on their side is like telling children there's no santa. I hope this is the equivalent of seeing Dad put the presents under the tree.

News outlets and others are free to use this video on the condition they credit me;

Australian freelance journalist, Austin G. Mackell,

and if possible a plug of my blog, The Moon Under Water, would be great:

http://austingmackell.wordpress.com

An anecdote I passed on to some people at the herald made it into the Diary section of the paper;
    LIBYAN MISSION

Given all the instability and bloodshed, there are many who are desperate to get out of Libya. Then there are those desperate to get in. They include Austin G. Mackell, an Australian freelance journalist. ”I’m not in Libya yet,” Mackell told the Diary yesterday, via email from Egypt. ”Had a few setbacks, including being held by the military for nine hours … The whole reason I was there so long was the Australian embassy – presumably busy with Kevin 747′s visit to Cairo – couldn’t dispatch anyone to sign me out.” The Department of Foreign Affairs says it was advised on Sunday afternoon by the Egyptian military that someone claiming to be an Aussie was being held in custody, but the name provided was not Austin Mackell and did not match any department records. And, said the military, he could be visited only on Monday morning. In the event, Mackell was released on Sunday night. He writes, ”Fortunately, my interrogator, Officer Hassan … bent the rules to let me go home. My Egyptian friend who came to get me commented that he thought having the Australian Foreign Minister in the country would help my cause. If only.”
I can say I think the embassy’s account of things reeks of bullshit. The Military Police had all my correct details including my passport number, and they weren’t idiots, and were done with me and wanted me gone.

They said that the embassy had specifically said they were too busy and that they would deal with it “tomorrow”.

47. I'm sorry they had 2 learn the hard way but main activists behind all this
not that google guy btw, he was just a tech tool, are solid socialists. They knew this was coming.

This is one of them http://www.arabawy.org/

One of their demands was dismantling privatization. Notice how all medias played that one down and pretended the revolution was won- go home and celebrate. The organizers are having none of it.
