The Capitol has been taken by the protesters but they are behaving well. Scott Walker is throwing a tantrum but then, that's no surprise. He tried to get the state police to remove the protesters by any means possible. They declined. The protesters are keeping the building tonight. And there have been calls for a statewide general strike but since this just happened, I'm not sure that's official yet, but it sure should be. I'll be wearing red to work tomorrow night and I'll admit, I'm nervous about a national general strike call but if it happens, I'll be there.

42. The final nail in the coffin of what passes for democracy in the US was driven into body politic
when the criminal supreme court selected Bush for president and we stood quietly. We did it to ourselves when we failed to stand up to this theft.

but only a simple majority quorum for other bills. By splitting the union stuff off from the rest of the bill, they make it non-fiscal & have enough Reptilians to form a quorum.

49. Badger Care is an extension of Medicaid.
Walker has proposed to severely restrict access to Badger Care & limit what it covers. An estimated 55,000 people would lose health coverage if the bill goes through. I'm not sure but I think that one would require the 3/5 quorum instead of the simple majority which is all they need for simple union-busting.

47. Actually he was stupid not to do this sooner...
He has allowed Democrats and union workers in Wisconsin and all over the country to get organized and mobilized. It was a dumb strategy.

Many teabaggers have been pleading with him to do this all along, and Democrats had been worried about this strategy from the beginning.

By allowing his opposition so much time to get energized and engaged in the fight, Walker severely weakened his hand.

Now the GOP will likely pass their union busting bill, but the entire episode will leave such a bad taste that he and the Republicans may well be doomed to recall or defeat in the upcoming elections.

26. If you want change you must be prepared to do what is necessary
I am NOT calling for violence, but I believe the time has come to step it up a notch. The building must be surround and power, phone and internet must be cut. Elected officials must not be allowed out of the building until they drop this matter completely. Some might say it is amount to kidnapping, but drastic times call for drastic measures. This is going to end in blood if something is not done soon.

"budget repair." That didn't work due to the Fabulous 14. Now the Rs are being really open about their intentions & dropping the fiscal pretense in order to get a bil they can pass with only a simple majority quorum instead of the 3/5 needed for budget bills.

108. This is only the begining
The Rightwingers now have a HUGE victory over unions and they will capitalize on it, its going national.

Where was all this emotion and support back in NOV when it counted?

Didn't people realize this is exactly what these idiots on the Right planned to do all along?

Where was our great communicator explaining it to the American people?

The Right campainged on it, they blast it all over their talk radio and faux news. They are going to systematically dismantle all of the core Democratic programs that make this country great and they are claiming this is the mandate of the 2010 elections.

121. Just got back!
I just got back from the Capitol. It was a wild scene and if I just knew how to post photos to this site I would- I'm normally a lurker who likes to read and not post.

The outer rings of the Capitol square are jammed with cars honking to the tune of "This is what democracy looks like". When I first arrived there were throngs of people crowding around the outside doors trying to get in and listening to speeches by John Nichols. He was talking about how and why this is illegal and how it can be fought.

After I was there for a while a few people started chanting that the side doors were open. I followed the mass of people into the building and the cops I saw just stepped aside and maybe even smiled. ;) The place was more crowded than I've seen in the past three weeks. There were Wisconsinites of all ages and sizes crowding into the place, and eventually the police just formed lines in front of the entrances to the Senate and other chambers.

On my way out I saw that they needed help moving all of the camping gear back into the building. They had sleeping bags, blankets, pads, tables food, first aid supplies, cleaning supplies, and anything else that you might need for a long term stay. I'm not sure how legal it was, but I may, or may not, have helped them carry several loads into the building.

Finally, I just had to get back home to my family; but, not before I joined the cars in the honking parade going on around the square.

Jon

132. Thousands
I got down there about 7:15 and there were hundreds in front of the door where I was standing. I jumped up on a pillar and saw people crowded around the Capitol in both directions. When I first got down here cars were allowed on the inner ring of the square, but the police quickly moved them out of there and closed down all of the streets around the square. Things seemed to grow very fast- very quickly.

Once I got into the building it was hard to move around due the the mass of protesters inside. Evey level was pack and even the stairways and hallways were standing room only. In the past they stated 2,800 people in the building and this was WAY larger than that. Heading back outside I watched as Ian's pizza started bring in food. They said that there phones were going off the hook with people from around the country calling in orders for the protesters.

Outside there were hundreds of cars circling the outer ring of the Capitol honking away and yelling out the windows. The drug store across the street was packed with people buying snacks to take into the building. I had to wait at least 15 minutes to check out as I need to buy a new thermometer for a sick kid at home. As I walked back to my parking spot I saw plenty of more people coming up to join the protest.

137. If you're not in Madison the best place to protest may not be your capitol
if you're not in one of those GOP dominated states.

All day tomorrow 1000 right wing radio stations across the country will get Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's back.

All day the national talkers will praise Walker for standing up to the Unions, like Reagan did. Many of the local talkers will, also.

Rush Limbaugh and Beck and Hannity and Levin and on and on with pin medals on him and continue to trash unions and teachers and public sector workers as right wing talk radio has done for the last two decades.

Rush Limbaugh recently called union workers and teachers and public employees bottom feeders and parasites. He and other national right wing talkers not only screen out callers that would disagree with them but some, if not all, may even use paid callers to pat them on the back. And Walker.

Limabugh denies this, as he does global warming.

Whatever happens in Wisconsin, this well established and dominating monopoly of public airwaves, reaching something like 50 million listeners a week, is going to get a free speech free ride for weeks to dampen down reaction to what is happening in Wisconsin and to support other ant-democratic actions like it.

If you want somewhere to protest and your state capitol is too far away or an inappropriate place to protest and you have a group, then consider your local Limbaugh station.

Some are more appropriate than others location-wise, but all are a big part of why we are here now. Tomorrow they will continue the ongoing attack on democracy, reading scripts supplied by corporate think tanks and maybe even getting calls from them.

And your local media might just be tired of getting attacked and threatened by them.

They are GOP power centers and the origin of much of the myths and distortions and lies that have taken America to this time and place. They make national debate based on facts impossible.

Universities all over the country, like the University of Wisconsin Madison, use these very loud global warming-denying, union hating, and racist stations to broadcast sports and they need to start looking for alternatives.

Their local sponsors need to look for better partners in their communities.

As long as these stations keep getting a free speech free ride the Scott Walkers will have that very loud wind in their sails.

162. All these hours later...I hope people are heeding the call and heading
to the capital.

This has been an amazing 24 hours in the history of American Politics. For the nearly 5500 viewers of this post. Thank you--I'm new to DU and you have shown me how powerful DU is to get the word out.

Union teacher here. My legislature is calling for 50% cuts to special ed in my district/ESD and they want to replace our publicly elected school board with various superintendents around the city who will decide what parts of special ed they will gut, what equipment they can take, what facilities they can take over. And not a single peep about how many teacher and assistants, speech teachers, autism specialists, etc. who will be terminated and the students who will be crammed into overcrowded rooms as their special ed classes are closed. (though they have made no plans for the kids even though the committee just approved the bill).

So, DU has made me feel powerful in my fight to keep my job and to make sure my students are taken care of. I hope the country will support us as much as we are supporting Wisconsin.

THANK YOU DU and everyone who read. :0)
