Imagine if, when 9/11 happened, you had no one to talk with about it.

Ever since Obama's election, the financial melt down, the BP disaster, etc. all the way to this, the apex of it all for me - the current Midwest debacle (I don't even know what to call this whole clusterf**k), I have had to be silent.

I live in Arizona. Nearly ALL of my local friends and family are Republican (the majority are Fox viewers). I have been avoiding all talk about this topic around them, and so have they. My daughter (God bless her) has already declared herself a Democrat, but at age 14 she's too young for me to talk to. My 20 y/o son who considers himself a conservative has been, believe it or not, the only person I've been able to talk to about this at all. However, he's still getting his feet wet in the political pool.

As for my Facebook "friends", not a single one of them has EVER posted anything political, nor commented when I have posted headlines, videos, photos. Their posts are all about what their kids are doing that day, or what their Bejeweled scores are, or what have you. I am trying very hard not to judge them as vapid, but it's not working too well.

There is a war escalating, monumental history being made, and aside from posting on DU, I have no one with whom to experience it, or talk about it. No, it's not as shocking and tragic as 9/11 - but honestly, this feels even worse to me. Because at least then, the enemy wasn't half the U.S. population. At least we could unite and commiserate together as Americans.

I cannot tell you what it's like, watching this on TV right now and knowing there will be no one there to talk about it with tomorrow.

I have never felt more alone in my life.

I'm going to look for some meetups, also check for local protests.

I'll camp out at the capitol by myself if I have to.

2. I am sorry to hear that you live in Klanistan (Arizona). I Can relate.
I was raised in a land of white flight cowards. Yes, paranoid and isolated right wingers do exist in Connecticut (upper Fairfield County, Litchfield County, and upper New Haven County).
I still live in CT, though I moved away from the white flight cowards. So now I have many more people whom I agree with to talk to.

7. Now, I am in the New Haven area. I was talking about areas such as Monroe and Shelton
Edited on Wed Mar-09-11 10:19 PM by Dawson Leery
when I spoke of "white flight cowards" I was speaking of Monroe and Shelton (Huntington is the "nicer" area of Shelton). Put Trumbull, Newtown, and Bethel in there too. I despise those God Damn towns. :puke:

11. Great. So which are the liberal areas?
The more liberal, the better. I'm there in 2016, baby!

12. Why 2016? As for the areas.
The "gold coast" leans to the left, though very expensive.
Fairfield is a large and diverse town and leans to the left. Stamford is nice and I would not mind a condo on the water (though again it is very expensive).
Most of New Haven and Hartford Counties are Democratic. In congress, Rosa DeLauro in New Haven and Rick Larsen in Hartford win regularly by 25-35%.
Our governor, Dan Malloy-D was the mayor of Stamford and very successful too.

16. I've been waiting to move back for YEARS!
2016 because that's when my daughter graduates from high school. I didn't want to move before she was in college. Though hopefully, she'll go to college in CT!

I have only lived in NY prior to this. My only criteria is that wherever I go, it's close enough driving distance to my parents who are ageing. Doesn't necessarily even have to be CT. Will also consider MA or RI.

8. I chose the wrong month to quit smoking. Sigh.
But, on a positive note, at least I'm still nicotine free! :)

9. Check meetup.com, MoveOn and Living Liberally...
for groups in your area. Here's a couple:

Liberal Ladies Social Meetup in Phoenix
http://www.meetup.com/Liberal-Ladies/

Drinking Liberally Phoenix, Thursday, March 10, 2011
http://livingliberally.org/chapter/blog/5656

"Anyway, it's that Thursday again: time for Phoenix Drinking Liberally. We get together every other Thursday at George and Dragon Pub located in beautiful downtown Phoenix just N. of the intersection of Central Ave. and Indian School (4240 N Central Ave.) with easy access via lightrail. Festivities start around 7pm. Come join fellow liberals for food, drinks and good conversation. If you don't drink alcohol, you're still welcome. Some of us drink non-alcoholic beverages. Just look for the red, white and blue placard that says "Drinking Liberally". We're usually in the large dining room to the right of the main entrance."

Might be a good way to meet some like-minded people, make friends, and have someone to talk to.

13. You are not alone.....
Edited on Wed Mar-09-11 10:40 PM by Jokinomx
Just remember the consciousness of a society is slow to rise. Many factors play a roll in the phenomenon including tragedies.

We lived through 8 years of hell with the previous pResident. I remember the disgusted feeling of a stolen election in 2000. The feeling of despair.... but there are many times in one's life that a feeling of despair comes along.

I am old enough to remember the JFK assassination and everything that followed. MLK... RFK... 4 dead students in Ohio... Watergate...sensing the end of a way of life watching reagan start this whole mess. I could go on and on...

We will get through this time of despair also. We all will.

Thank goodness that we have a forum such as this site where we can find others with a like mind.

Slowly... others that don't understand... will. It may hurt in the meantime, however we will survive as a society.

I hear the religious factions of our society talk about how God created everything and they miss the realization that WE are the Creators. Us... me and you and the neighbor across the street. We all create our world and everything in it. It would just be nice to see more people do a better job with what they are creating in their part of the world. Because it affects everyone not just their little part of the world they inhabit.

With that... You are not alone. Stand tall and be proud that you have reached the awareness that you have. Others will follow.

Peace

14. I am in same boat, but choose to be
I'd rather sit in silence than constantly get it from all sides. Family. Co-workers.
To vent, get some mental relief (the human kind, not just forums, etc.) I do call my progressive friends almost daily. So I guess that might be an outlet for you?

18. I know a couple women from CodePink Phoenix - they're
amazing and wonderful people. My suggestion would be for you to look them up and join their next action. You might not want to do everything they do, but you'll meet some like minded people and who knows, you just might make some new friends.
