Is it possible to be anti-union and a Democrat?
This guy I know keeps telling me he's anti-union. But he also claims that he's a committed Democrat.

I told him that the two things are antithetical. That you can't really be a Democrat, based on values, and also anti-union.

He keeps railing the Wisconsin unions. He says they're "out of control". :eyes:

1. You can call yourself anti-union and a Democrat, but it's not recommended
if you want to get an elected position as a Democrat.

Also, anyone who claims to be anti-union and a Democrat is lying.

5. That's basically what I told him.
But he refuses to admit that he's not really a Democrat.

I tried to explain to him that being an anti-union Democrat is like being a gay Republican. It doesn't make any sense.

Unions are the bedrock of the Democratic party.

6. They are hardly out of control.
They are doing what unions do, stand up for the working class when they are being crapped upon. I take it your friend is a "new Democrat". We used to call them moderate Republicans. They didn't like unions either.

10. He's actually older than me.
Probably in his late 30s or early 40s.

He says he's been a committed Democrat for a long time.

12. I have a suggestion
Edited on Thu Mar-10-11 01:39 AM by AsahinaKimi
Tell him its the UNION and their Members Money that elects Democrats, because the Corporations will not. Show me a major Corporation, and I will show you a ton of Republicans. You tell him if it were NOT FOR THE UNIONS, we would probably have a One party country.

14. Well. I mean you can find a lot of Democrats sucking from the corporate teat.
But you rarely ever hear of Republicans that support unions. Or unions that support Republicans for that matter.

26. Show me a Corporation that supports a Democrat
Democrats who suck from the Corporate teat are in the pockets of the Corporations, but when it comes time for the Corporations to put money into the campaign, they will go REPUBLICAN every time.

15. Absolutely not
Labor is one of the foundations of the Democratic Party. I wish the party would be more forceful with that.

19. My brother is for a very illogical reason
He had a job in a business where was technically "management" so he couldn't be in a union.

But the actual job was one In which he did the same work as the union workers.

He was always complaining about being overworked and underpaid.

But he also hated unions. Why? Because the union guys made better money and better benefits.

I suggested that instead of hating unions, it might make more sense to recognize that he was getting screwed by his employer, and he'd be a lot better off if he were in one.

21. Companies like to have lower level managers so they
can work the stuffing out of them with no extra pay. When I had a union job, I regularly made a bigger paycheck than my manager and even with overtime, I usually worked fewer hours. They eventually tried to promote me to management and I declined.

They are overrun by right-wingers. They are all such nice people until someone brings up politics. And then they all turn into animals.
