What Exactly Is The Recall Process In Wisconsin?....... |
|
Edited on Thu Mar-10-11 05:58 AM by global1
I know it was probably explained before here on DU but given the events of the last 24 hours I think it would be good to go over it again here. I have a number of questions about it.
I heard that a certain amount of signatures are required for a recall. Are signatures acceptable from voters across the entire state of Wisconsin or just in the district of that particular state legislator?
What happens when the threshold amount of signatures is reached? Does that person automatically get removed from office or does it go to a vote? If a vote - just in the district or throughout the whole state?
Let's say the recall is successful and the person is removed from office - how is that person replaced? Is there another election? Is the election statewide or just in the particular district?
How long could this process take? 30, 60, 90 days or more? If a special election is required - special elections cost money? Where does the money come from? How are they funded?
I know I've heard about recalls of state senators and the governor (after 1 yr in office) but what about the house Repugs of Wisconsin? Is there a movement to recall some of them as well?
Bottom line - the recall prospect is a great strategy but I'm thinking it isn't a slam dunk as many here are thinking it is. One thing I still can't explain is that if the Repug senators were threatened with recall - why they didn't back down from this vote? One would have thought that they would have gotten frightened by the prospect of losing their job and that didn't happen.

While I can't answer with any certainty I worry that the prospect of recall elections via electronic voting does not scare Republicans because these machines are easily rigged by their corporate owner/operators and completely non-auditable.

5. Wrong. Wisconsin requires a verifiable paper ballot. |

Something tangible for recounts, of which we had many at all levels this past November. No irregularities in election day recounts reported anywhere in the state.
The reason they aren't shitting bricks in fear for their jobs right now? Several possibilities.
1) Walker has made it so intolerable to be a GOPpie in Madison that they don't care. 2) They think if they are going to be recalled - fuck us as much as they can while they have their seats and get cushy six-figure lobbying jobs when this is all done. 3) All but one are narcissistic sociopaths

8. Time to devote our energies to the recall elections. |
|
Rallies and strikes are useful and good, but I think last night proved that such actions only harden these Repuglican hearts. So what to do? Given the choice between a general strike and a statewide recall of these thugs, I think the recall route is by far the wiser choice. In the broad scheme of things, six to twelve months is like the blink of an eye.
