After GOP Strips Bargaining Rights, Unions Launch Morning Protests Across Wisconsin. Strikes Next?
Thursday = Mar 10, 2011 = 1:47 am
By Art Levine = http://inthesetimes.com/working/entry/7041/after_gops_union-stripping_unions_launch_9_a.m._protests_across_wiscon/

In the wake of the Wisconsin's Senate end-run to strip public employees of collective bargaining rights, thousands of angry protesters descended again on the state capital. (See video above of protest in downtown Madison immediately after the Wis. Senate voted late Wednesday.)

And the top labor unions are organizing state-wide protests Thursday morning, providing information on websites (also here) and social media sites such as Twitter.

State Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Wisc.) put the issue bluntly on MSNBC: "This is our Pearl Harbor of workers' rights. The governor has really been out of bounds with a sneak attack in the middle of the night without any public notice, without any input from many hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites who have expressed their views. It's a sad day for Wisconsin."

With thousands rushing to to the state capitol building and pushing through police-guarded doors, anger is running so high that AFL-CIO activists posted this advisory: "Keep it peaceful, brothers and sisters. That's who we are." ..........

10 a.m. — Rep. Joe Parisi, D-Madison, said he and the Rev. Jesse Jackson were denied entrance to the Capitol at both the King Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard entrances.

"We were told the building is closed to everyone right now," Parisi told a large crowd outside the King Street entrance. "I’d like to be let in so I can at least vote on this bill."

Meanwhile, reporters trying to cover a press conference Thursday morning by Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca, D-Kenosha, were denied entry to the Assembly parlor where the press conference was scheduled.
~~~
Wisconsin State Journal reporter Mary Spicuzza confirmed reporters were not being allowed into the press conference.
33. One group stripping another of established rights is not legitimate.
It's a fundamental violation of core democratic principles. One step beyond that, if it's allowed, is total tyranny.
18 people meeting in secret and taking away the long-established legal rights of an entire sector of people, can not ever be allowed. Even more ridiculous, the bill the Repubs passed was written AFTER the vote.
If that's legal, then our Constitution is worthless.
Wisconsin Dems On Their Way Home
Melissa Jeltsen | March 10, 2011, 12:53PM
Three weeks after he left the state, WisPolitics reports that Dem State Sen. Jim Holperin is returning home--and that he expects other Democrats to head back as well.
Holperin said that a majority of the Democratic caucus met Wednesday and agreed to return to the state after the Assembly voted through the anti-collective-bargaining provision that was passed by the Senate Wednesday night.
They got it from here:
http://budget.wispolitics.com/2011/03/holperin-on-his-way-home.html
44. WI GOP: We Didn't Have To Provide Notice For Key Committee Meeting On Union Bill
State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald's (R) office released an counter-argument to one particular Dem objection: That the sudden conference committee would have violated the state's open meetings laws.
At last night's conference committee (video below), Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca (D) strenuously argued that the conference committee violated the state's open meetings law, which requires at least 24 hours notice before a government meeting, unless there is good cause to act more quickly. Instead, only about two hours notice was supplied for this meeting. As the Capital Times reports, many opponents of the bill are already mobilizing challenge the bill on this basis, that a key meeting to pass the bill was illegal.
In response, as WisPolitics reported last night, Fitzgerald's office released a message from Chief Clerk Rob Marchant, saying that the conference was subject to different rules -- the ones governing special sessions of the legislature -- and that no advance notice is required at all.
45. Fitzgerald admits union busting is to prevent Obama from winning Wis. in 2012.
Here's what Fitzgerald said, via Think Progress:
Well if flip the state senate, which is obviously their goal with eight recalls going on right now, they can take control of the labor unions. If we win this battle, and the money is not there under the auspices of the unions, certainly what you’re going to find is President Obama is going to have a much difficult, much more difficult time getting elected and winning the state of Wisconsin.
Here is video of that:
Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca, D-Kenosha, filed a complaint Thursday morning with the Dane County district attorney charging that the Joint Conference Committee that convened at 6 p.m. Wednesday and passed an amended version of Gov. Scott Walker's budget repair bill is in violation of the open meetings law.
The complaint states that Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and his brother, Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, and others "knowingly attended the meeting in violation of the Open Meetings law" and are subject to penalties identified in state statute.
The complaint asks that the actions taken at the meeting be declared void.
District Attorney Ismael R. Ozanne confirmed this morning that he had received the complaint and that his office would be reviewing it, noting that either he or Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen has authority to do so.
Wisconsin Senate Democrats who fled to Illinois three weeks ago are coming back.
Sen. Jim Holperin said Thursday that he was on his way home to Conover and other Democrats were either on their way back or would be leaving soon.
He says there was no reason for them to stay away any longer since Senate Republicans passed the bill without them on Wednesday night.
