Sale expected to boost troubled institution, but Milwaukee could lose jobs
By Paul Gores of the Journal Sentinel
Dec. 17, 2010

http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/112058794.html

After two years in the red and facing a still-bumpy road back to profitability, Marshall & Ilsley Corp. said Friday it would be acquired by the Canadian parent company of Harris Bank, a move that should invigorate the wounded M&I franchise but will cost Milwaukee a corporate headquarters.

M&I, which is the largest bank based in Wisconsin, agreed to be acquired by Toronto-based BMO Financial Group - known in Canada as the Bank of Montreal - in an all-stock deal valued by the companies at $4.1 billion.

10. I found this:
Anti-Walker protestors target M&I Bank
Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal
Date: Wednesday, February 23, 2011, 12:32pm CST

* M&I Bank cuts 143 jobs; 20 here
* M&I Bank lays off 20 in Twin Cities
* Outlook: Banking and Finance - Jeanne Crain, M&I Bank
* M&I narrows loss
* Industry Outlook 2011: Work ahead, but recovery, too

About 12 sign-carrying protesters chanted and passed out literature outside of Marshall & Ilsley Corp.’s headquarters in Milwaukee, calling attention to M&I executives’ contributions to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and state Senate Republicans.

M&I has about 30 locations in Minnesota, most in the Twin Cities area.

Good Jobs and Livable Neighborhoods Coalition of Milwaukee — which includes religious, environmental, social and organized labor groups — wanted to call attention to executives with the state’s largest bank backing Walker and Republicans, said spokesman Dave Somerscales.

Walker and Republicans want to reduce state employee union bargaining power, even as M&I has not repaid its federal Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) debt, Somerscales said.

“Banks get a bailout/We get a sellout,” the picketers chanted outside M&I headquarters Tuesday.

Web sites urge boycott of Wis. gov's contributors
Associated Press
10:55 a.m. CST, March 9, 2011

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chibrknews-web-sites-urge-boycott-of-wis-govs-contributors-20110309,0,1716658.story

Opponents of Scott Walker's budget balancing bill are urging consumers to boycott companies whose executives or political action committees made big contributions to the Republican governor's campaign.

A Facebook page and at least one Web site target companies, including Johnsonville Sausage, the Wisconsin Realtors Association, Northwestern Mutual Insurance Co. and M&I Bank.

Northwestern Mutual spokeswoman Jean Towell tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the company's political action committees contributed to the campaigns of both Republicans and Democrats.

M&I Bank says individual employees made contributions to Scott Walker and Tom Barrett, not the bank or the Marshall & Ilsley Corporation.

and couldn't be happier. HuffPo ran a campaign where you could check on the strength on local banks.
