Last November, we had to fill out the elections for my husband's health insurance policy, mainly setting the amount to go into the Health savings plan. (X dollars go out of the paycheck pre-tax, but if we don't spend it all on approved medical expenses, the insurance company keeps the rest.)
Now, one kid was planning on buying health insurance Jan 1, only to discover Jan 2 that the company wouldn't sell her a policy because of pre-existing conditions. She can buy into her state's Medicaid, but only after 6 months. As it happens, she doesn't turn 26 for 6 months.
So we tried to put her under our policy, but were told that we would have had to do that last November.
So now the company has hired an outside auditor to demand all employees provide marriage certificates, copies of their 1040, birth certificates and name of spouse's employers to prove that all the dependents are eligible. (Working spouses must buy insurance through their employers under some circumstances.)
According to the info the outside auditor received, our daughter is covered.
Wish me luck, I'm going to be making a ton of phone calls!

1. my husband and all his coworkers were forced to provide documentation |

for coverage last year i think it may have been. my brother raised a big stink at having to provide proof. not sure why as he watches faux and so thinks companies should be able to do whatever they want.

2. Good luck. The whole health care insurance system is designed ... |
|
... so that the "insurers" never have to pay.
