he alleged gang rape of an 11-year-old girl by at least 18 boys and young men has sparked shame and outrage in a tiny Texas town, but it has also stirred racial tensions that threaten to split the East Texas hamlet.

All of the defendants arrested are African-American and the girl is Hispanic.

Houston community activist Quanell X will host a town hall meeting this evening called "What's the real truth behind the rape allegations?"

"Every adult male that had sex with this child should go to prison, I don't care what the color is. But I do not believe black males are the only ones that had contact with this young child," said Quanell X, the leader of Houston's New Black Panther Party. "It appears to me there's only been the selective prosecution of one community, which is African American."

Isn't that the standard Republican excuse? BUT WAIT! The defendants are African-American so that will really put a twist in the GOP undies (if they're wearing any). Do they blame the Welfare-cheating black people or the obviously illegal Mexican girl? Damn it must be tough to be a Republican in situations like this. I'd say it would be a problem for them to decide, but decision-making implies brain activity. They'll just have to wait for FOX to tell them what to think.

In the NYT write up, there were comments like, "these boys are going to have to live with this all their lives" and "she dressed like a woman in her 20s" and "where was that girl's mother?"

As for any alleged racism involving the dog-people who did this, there ought to be enough video to show what races which attackers descend from.

16. The girl was removed from her parents

There seems to be some attempt to blame the parents for this. I certainly don't know the whole story but I do know that there were plenty of times when by kids were 11 when I didn't know exactly where they were. 11 year olds can be pretty independent when they want to be.

Regardless of how she was dressed, she was 11 and in a small community I think there were plenty of people, including the attackers who knew this.

We had a case here in CA last year where a girl was gang raped. She was a high school freshman. Some of the guys were much older and like this case, some called their friends and took pictures. One of the excuses used by the defense was that because she was drunk she was really consenting, even though she tried to stop them. Sick.

A commenter I heard on the television news was talking about how group-think and 'Other-ism' could have played a part in this horrible atrocity. They were, according to this commentator, effectively 'giving each other permission' to commit this crime. Still not an excuse, but perhaps a partial explanation.
