Screw Walker. If he wants to not only cut our benefits (which could have been negotiated) but our collective bargaining rights, our right to strike, and spit in our faces while saying we do a good job I say this is part of the remedy:

What us younger teachers need to do: Start applying for jobs in other states. Be ready to relocate.

What the older teachers need to do: Retire if you are financially able to.

What all teachers need to do: Apply for jobs in nearby states (Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan) and be ready to commute.

Of course the same thing applies for state and other government workers - and we should also keep up the pressure on recalls, lawsuits, and protests. Quite frankly, most conservatives are too stupid to realize that there aren't a whole ton of potential teachers and professors waiting in the wings to take jobs with no collective bargaining in a cold state like WI.

1. In 2009 we heard a lot of conservatives talk about "going Galt"
Of course that never materialized, but now might be a real good time for all state public employees to do just that. They could shut the whole state down.

2. Why not just do a general strike.

8. Too early for a general strike. Wait until at least recall elections.

3. I wouldn't put it past them to call martial law in the event of a severe strike
much less work to privatise anything weakened for privatisation--- part of their overall plan to own everything.

4. Are you aware of the job situations nationwide?
No...this is THEIR state. They need to fight for it.

Quitting is for cowards--it is what a republican would do.

5. I don't picture
a lot of teachers flocking to your state to apply for positions for some reason. Nor do I picture firefighters and police officers jumping at the chance either.

Trust me, you won't want to move to floriduh at the present time, we got us one hell of a teabagging government hell bent on screwing us further into the glades than we've ever been.

9. The same thing is happening in many other states
Ohio, Florida, Iowa, Indiana and many others as well.

This is an orchestrated effort to strip unions to the bone and then take what they want.

11. We're not union
I am a UW prof too. We aren't unionized but were in the process of organizing before this shit storm blew up. Our pay rate is already well below the regional and national averages. The only thing we had were decent bennies, now they're stripping those away too. I've had numerous candidates practically laugh at us when we offered them jobs and told them what their starting pay would be. I've also seen many talented people hit the road in the last 2 years.

15. Amen.
My father was life member of IBEW and the union helped him comfortably provide for our family while I was growing up. I was IBEW and Teamsters as I worked my way through college and grad school. That provided the benefits I needed to cover my family while I worked toward an advanced degree. Now the Republicans want me to work for 89% of what I was making 5 years ago. Ridiculous.

12. Yep. Sadly, the 'drown govt in the bathtub' strategy is taking hold
All levels of govt are being strangled by the RW policies.

17. Why should the victims have to move and act like it is their fault??
It is time to hold the criminals to the fire and kick their ass out the door.
Hold their crimes up to the light of day, let the world see the scum for what they are.
The time to roll over is long past.
