NH lawmaker suggests sending disabled 'to Siberia' |
|
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- A 91-year-old freshman Republican state lawmaker suggested New Hampshire's mentally disabled should be shipped to Siberia and said he is unapologetic about the comment.
State Rep. Martin Harty of Barrington said he was kidding around with an unidentified woman caller who supported funding for the homeless when he raised the issue of eugenics and the world's population growth.
"I was kidding with her and it kind of got away from me," he said of the conversation. "It was a girl that wanted money for the crazy people, the people ... a good percentage of the homeless people are mentally disturbed."
He said he didn't know what to do with them.

7. It's the lower house of the New Hampshire legislature |
|

400 members for a state with about 1.2 million population. (The House has only 435 for the whole country.)
So yeah, in a district with about 3,000 people -- and even fewer registered voters -- pretty much anything can, and frequently does, happen. :eyes:

20. King Ronnie didn't do that. The "turning out was done in the 50s and 60s. |
|
What King Ronnie did was cut the low-income housing funds.
And that is exactly what Obama and the Congress is doing again.. by 8.9 BILLION.
Is that OK with you?

which Obama is ALSO doing.
Yet, no outrage about that.

People respect strong and wrong more than weak and right.
Dick Durbin blubbering on the Senate floor apologizing is not a sign of strength.
Saying what you mean and meaning what you say (even if it is backassward and STUPID gets respect).

So this asshole refers to people with disabilities as "crazy people?"
I'd love to know what he thinks is "a good percentage" of homeless people, given that it's a very persistent but untrue myth most people believe that most homeless people have a mental illness, when in fact it's a very small percentage of homeless people. It was only right after Reagan emptied mental health care facilities that there was a big temporary spike in homeless people with mental health issues... um 30 years ago.
And let's be serious for a moment, any politician who would even Joke about stripping away the rights of a vulnerable group of his own constituents and shipping them away to a notorious wasteland needs to lose his job.
He is joking about it because he honestly does not value this group of people. And because he would honestly like to get rid of this group of people. And because his personal censer was momentarily offline and he said what he normally wouldn't say, the truth about how he feels and what he'd like to do.
Someone like this cannot be trusted to ever work honestly and fairly to help homeless people get the services needed to get help and get off the street. He is going to find ways to hide homeless people and send them to Siberia. Even if that means sending them to jails, or prisons, or work farms, or anyplace else he gets the chance to ship them off too. He'll do it as soon as he gets the chance, because it will get them off the streets, and he'll think that it's better than offering real assistance. He has already said where his preferences lie.
