Prediction: teachers in the affected states will reduce their volunteer time accordingly
As I also noted about teachers buying school supplies with their own money in this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x609154

I must also note that you will see teachers respond to the loss of job security, bargaining rights, income and tangible benefits by reducing their volunteer time accordingly.

So don't be surprised if your school can't find faculty chaperons for the prom this spring because some of those teachers are now driving taxi cabs on the weekend. Or if teachers sharply reduce their commitments to writing letters of recommendations for students' college applications because so many of those teachers are now moonlighting by teaching community college classes at night.

Need a coach for 7th grade JV basketball? No takers, because the $200 stipend is just not worth it anymore, and all of the qualified teachers are doing pizza deliveries three nights a week.

Perhaps parents who don't like this can write to their legislators to get these laws changed.

1. Stop all high school sports because of union busting and watch what happens.

3. No more high school basketball in Indiana?
That would get people's attention right quick.

10. I just saw this posted on Facebook about Florida...
"Wake up fla! If Gov. Scott's education budget passes it could mean the elimination of all High School sports in Florida. Yes, that includes football! Sports are not part of any academic standards. They are not measured by FCAT. They do not count under No Child Left Behind..."

Apparently everything here now must be measured by FCAT. They just voted today to tie 50% of teacher salaries to test scores.Terrible state.

11. + a bunch! This is what needs to be done. Cut sports programs!
There is bound to be a lot of money there. That will fix the budgets so that our children can learn! Great idea!

13. I remember they did that on an old episode of Boston Public
And the principal challenged the parent club to raise the money to keep sports programs running.

Probably do-able in wealthier districts where parents can just get out the checkbook, but much tougher in poorer districts.

5. As long as the children are told it is the Republicans' doing
Parents should start complaining to their representatives because after all it will be THEIR children who will be suffering.

6. What sucks is that it forces many good teachers to resist generous impulses
Edited on Thu Mar-10-11 07:43 PM by RufusTFirefly
I am the son and grandson of teachers and I know from personal experience how teachers really pour their hearts into their work. It's clearly not a job you do to get rich.

Teachers go above and beyond the call of duty so often because they care.

But you can only continue to be played for a sucker for just so long.

It saddens me greatly that instead of honoring the dedication of some of the country's true heroes, we kick them in the teeth. Again. And again. And again.

8. I understand that many teachers
provide “snacks” for those children that often come to school hungry. If teachers stop volunteering there are going to be some children that will suffer. but on the other hand no one will really know all that teachers give until they stop giving. And I think we have to come to that point—God help us all

9. What makes you think that time is "voluntary"?
Most schools that I know put teachers under a contractual obligation to take part in at least some sort of extracurricular activity, whether it be coaching, club sponsorship, or chaperoning school dance night. Sure, you get paid a stipend for your time, but the fact of the matter is that such activities are not voluntary.

12. well, here's the thing
if teachers no longer have the right to bargain over volunteer activities, the volunteer activities could easily become mandatory activities.
