LINCOLN -- State lawmakers gave final approval to several bills on Thursday, including measures to keep picketers further away from mourners at funerals and to allow prison inmates and parolees to earn more “good time” and a quicker release from custody.
The funeral picketer measure, Legislative Bill 284, was inspired by contentious protests conducted by members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan.
Among the services they target are those of military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, which has inspired clashes and efforts to screen off pickets and drawn out their chants.
Omaha Sen. Bob Krist sponsored the bill, which requires such protesters to be at least 500 feet from mourners, 200 feet more than under current state law.
Law enforcement officials, Krist said, recommended that distance to better head off confrontations between pickets and mourners.
