13. UPDATE 1-Building on fire as strong earthquake jolts east Japan
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/11/japan-quake-idUSL3E7EB0IP20110311

(Reuters) - An earthquake measuring 7.9 struck off the northeast coast of Japan on Friday, shaking buildings in the capital Tokyo, causing at least one fire and triggering a six-metre (20-foot) tsunami warning, NHK television and witnesses reported.

The public broadcaster showed black smoke billowing from a building in Odaiba, a Tokyo suburb, and bullet trains to the north of the country have been halted.

NHK said a tsunami of 50 cm (20 inches) had hit Japan's northern coast.

The U.S. Geological Survey verified a magnitude of 7.9 at depth of 15.1 miles and located the quake 81 miles east of Sendai, Honshu. The stock market extended its losses after the quake was announced.

The people on the coast are gonna get smashed.

I can only think of the poor people on the coasts and island off Kanagawa, Sendai.

I am chatting with friends in Tokyo and their houses are still shaking with aftershocks.

Okay... just heard MSNBC say "tsunami watch" for Hawaii. But now a woman is saying "watch" just means it's far away. So it doesn't sound like "watch" means less likely.

131. She got hold of a rattled 4th grader all alone looking for his mom
The house was destroyed in the quake. Everyone was outside. The shaking has not stopped at all in Ibaragi Prefecture. The water didn't hit the house, so that's a relief. While my mom was calming down her great nephew, his mom arrived. Everyone was at school or work when this happened.

My mother's family lives in a very old large farmhouse that has been in the family for centuries. Other relatives are not answering phones. We will have to keep trying in the morning.

In the meantime, on the west coast of the US, I intend to sleep with one eye open. BTW, I predicted this quake after the NZ quake. I have been watching the patterns for years. Clockwise. Alaska. I always call February earthquake season in Washington state. That's when they tend to happen here. Sometimes they skip us and hit Cali. Then down the coast to South America. Subduction zones might be under stress from waves, tides, storms in the Pacific. That's why it happens in cyclical fashion.

OK. I am an English major not a scientist.

From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Watch and Advisory #3 issued 03/10/2011 at 11:33PM PST

UPDATED MAGNITUDE TO 8.8

The Tsunami Advisory continues in effect for the coastal areas of Alaska from Chignik Bay, Alaska to Attu, Alaska.

The Tsunami Watch continues in effect for the coastal areas of California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska from the California-Mexico border to Chignik Bay, Alaska.

A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected. Significant, widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

A Tsunami Watch means that all coastal residents in the watch area should prepare for possible evacuation. A tsunami watch is issued to areas which will not be immediately impacted by the tsunami. Watch areas will either be upgraded to warning or advisory status, or canceled.
