first waves have "slammed" into San Francisco or LA only goes to demonstrate they don't care for facts, but exaggeration, and misrepresentation. Not too much different from their reporting of Representative Gifford, or there lack of coverage of what is going on in Wisconsin.
Of course what is happening in Japan is where the actual tragedy and horror is, and the journalists reporting there are from international sources. Much different reporting, not the yellow journalism that we have to experience daily
The uproar from certain elements of our media when Hillary contrasted Al Jezzera with our reporting was right on

1. It's vile--and the biggest threat to democracy we have. |
|
I'm old enough to remember (barely) Walter Cronkite, Huntley and Brinkley, and Howard K. Smith and Harry reasoner--all of whom reported more solid, factual news in a half-hour than the prettified puppets at CNN report in a 24/7 week.

14. They reported facts...NOT opinions. |
|
Usually their factual material needed 3 sources to support the information. If they did give opinions....it was in a separate "Opinions" segment.
The danger we are experiencing now, is that many people think that the unsubstantiated news/opinions (morphing of news AND opinion) is the way it has ALWAYs been. It is not.
A somewhat easy solution is....when you hear (person to person) disturbing news.....ask the person, "What are your sources (plural) of information?" My guess is, if they are Fox News viewers, they won't know what you are talking about.

"The stupid" gets promoted with almost every utterance by the puppets of the corporate "news channels".

3. Oh, I dunno that all the reporting in Japan is foreign, or even that the foreign is best. |
|
The AP's been doing great work there practically from the moment of the quake, and even CNN's been pretty solid.
I completely agree with you, though, that breathless reports about the potential for tsunami damage along the West Coast are sensationalistic. And in that sense, you're absolutely right -- sensationalism is the currency of American media.

15. As I said in my post... |

I'm not defending sensationalistic reporting in this country, just pointing out that good work is being done by American press in Japan.

7. It's a huge gift to the corporate media |
|
There's nothing like a cataclysmic event someplace else, for them to use as a distraction from the evil goings-on in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and other states.
Sickening, but it's the bitter truth.

is also over-the-top. Great way to get Wisconsin off the news... oh wait, there was no coverage. Alright, great way to get rid of the Sheen... yeah, that's it.
The tragedy is in Japan; on that, I would think we can all agree.

hitting hawaii--which was interesting, since I had been watching the coverage on the weather channel two hours earlier when the waves started coming in.
of course, the fact that they kept showing a beach in hawaii, while talking about the devastation in japan was annoying.
