Photos from Japan, incredible.
http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2011/03/earthquake-in-japan/100022/

The only good things I can see here are it was during daytime, and in a country where they are as prepared as they can be, and those closest got a minute or 2 warning.

3. Those pictures might take the cake as the most surreal disaster pics I've ever seen. Esp. pic #15
Just unreal. I keep seeing those images and I can't help but thinking "I can't see people in those houses and cars but there must be people trapped in at least some of them. How horrible. What if that were my home, my family?" Just a nightmare.

4. My daughter-in-law is Okinawan.
Her mother, two brothers and her best friend live on the mainland. I just got off the phone with her and she heard from her friend, but still can't get through to family. She's a tough girl and hearing her cry kills me.

Wow. While typing this my son just sent me a text. They got a hold of her mother. She and the brothers are okay, but they can't find her aunt.

14. Thank you.
The Japanese (and Okinawans) are not emotional people. My d-i-l keeps trying to force herself to laugh. Instead of talking about the earthquake, she keeps changing the subject, but I can hear her crying. I just wish I could be there with her.

This is just two days after my son told me they've decided to move back to Japan after he gets out of the Marines. I feel sick.

7. Because it is an active plate zone? Or do they mean why not as many dead as
the x-mas quake of 2004? Because they are a better prepared yet it was a huge quake. Because even though we each are the center of our own universe, it is NOT all about us?

8. I'm not quite sure what the person was asking...
That question was just followed up with an "I'll pray for them" kind of sentiment.
