Humans remain in extreme danger as a species |
|
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 12:23 PM by kpete
Earthquake/Tsunami reminds us of Futility of War Juan Cole Every once in a while, amidst our petty wars and squabbles with each other, Nature reminds us that the real threat to humankind comes from her, not from other human beings. Climate change is human-driven, but its danger is in unleashing uncontrollable natural forces of immense power. We are still defenseless against a meteor strike of the sort that helped polish off the dinosaurs. And, we lack good defenses against tsunamis. Unless we can put aside our divisions and work effectively together on these natural threats, humans remain in extreme danger as a species.http://www.juancole.com/2011/03/earthquaketsunami-reminds-us-of-futility-of-war.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+juancole%2FxAWt+%28Informed+Comment%29peace and solidarity, kpete

15. If other animals had a prison system |
|
it would most certainly be so. We are public enemy number one in the animal kingdom.

3. 'Twas ever thus - for all species, not just human beings |

We're here through Nature's power and exist at Nature's pleasure.

5. Bullshit. Humans are more of a threat to other humans |
|
I accept the danger posed by Mother Nature, it's unavoidable.
It's the danger from other humans that is not excusable, which makes it so much worse.

9. That's what our mindless polluting of the planet is all about. |

Mother nature will naturally be bad on occasion but humanity can aggravate her to far greater extremes with ever more tragic results by trashing our only home in the Universe.
Humans are the ultimate threat to humans but the environment can and does serve as the "middle man."

And it's the same with other "Large Brain" primates. In the nasty MF category, we're right up there with Chimps except something in our "Large Brains" is supposed to tell us right from wrong. It frequently fails~

12. You might want to check your math on that. |
|
Mother Nature is orders of magnitude more destructive. It's not even close.
I do agree that destruction by humans is inexcusable, guns, nukes, money and religion are all at fault.

I'd much prefer to die in a natural disaster than in an oven in a Nazi concentration camp.
But that's just me.

13. Well individuals are certainly facing some risk |
|
but the species?
Not at all. The 2004 tsunami was far worse than this. And it didn't make any significant impact in the human population.
