Report: Japan earthquake, tsunami death toll rises to 1,000

Both Reuters and the Los Angeles Times are reporting that at least 1,000 people are presumed dead in Japan from Friday's 8.9 earthquake.

The quake triggered a tsunami killing people while carrying away ships, cars and homes. Media reports state thousands of residents were stranded on rooftops while waiting for rescue workers.

President Barack Obama have offered condolences and aid to Japan's victims. White House advisers are discussing plans to assist Japan, as well as the U.S. states and territories that could be affected. The Pentagon ordered a number of U.S. military ships to move toward Japan, preparing to render aid and bring supplies if needed.

1. The smaller (7.2) Kobe quake killed something like 6500

and there wasn't even a tsunami following it. It will be weeks before all the missing in rural areas are added in and the death toll is likely to rise dramatically as time goes on. There is one known death in California and as far as I know, no one has reported on casualties on Pacific islands yet.
