NH GOP Senator Says The Mentally Ill Are ‘Defective People’ That Should Be Shipped Off To Siberia
via Think Progress:

State “budget writers looking for cash to balance the books have stripped a cumulative $1.8 billion from mental health services over the last 2 1/2 years,” with some states like Kentucky slashing their spending by as much as 47 percent. This is particularly alarming when viewed alongside incidents like the mass shooting by Jared Loughner, who many suggest was mentally disturbed.

In light of this huge wave of cuts, Sharon Omand, a community health care center manager and resident of Stafford, New Hampshire, called her state senator Martin Harty (R) recently to request more funding for community mental health programs and for the homeless. Omand was shocked by Harty’s response. The state senator told her “the world is too populated” and that there are too many “defective people.” When Omand asked what should be done with these “defective people” that are mentally ill, Harty suggested sending them to Siberia, something that he said Hitler was “right” to do:

Barrington Republican Martin Harty told Sharon Omand, a Strafford resident who manages a community mental health program, that “the world is too populated” and there are “too many defective people,” according to an e-mail account of the conversation by Omand. <...>

Omand says Harty then stated, “I wish we had a Siberia so we could ship them all off to freeze to death and die and clean up the population.” Omand said Harty appeared to be serious. After Omand responded that his idea sounded like what Adolf Hitler did in World War II, Omand said Harty responded, “Hitler did something right, and I agree with (it).”

1. Judging from the game plan the Republicans are using
It's not that they worship Hitler, it's that they are taking lessons from him.

In Europe he would be arrested for talking like that.

Not a senator, a member of the lower house
which has 400 members (by way of comparison, the House of Representatives has 435).

In a state of around 1.2 million population, that yields districts of about 3,000 people each. This is NH's twisted idea of "grassroots democracy". So it's almost a guarantee that at least a handful of whackballs like this will be inhabiting Concord at any given time. :eyes:

28. Do the computers have anything to do with this?
Is this solely the Koch Bros/T-BAGGERS -- ?

IMO, I'd question every election back to Nixon/Humphrey --

I don't think there ever was a Nixon "Southern Strategy" -- only the new voting computers!

Keep in mind also that the LARGE computers used by MSM/corporate-press began to come in

during the mid-1960's and which gave them huge new powers to PREDICT and CALL elections.

To PREDICT and CALL winners and losers -- what we saw in 2000 was simply a REVERSAL of those

new powers!!

These are GOP voting computers -- I imagine they are still having some effect on their

ability to steal elections?

Here's an interesting web site of an investigation by two journalists of the computers

in Florida during the late 1960's -- they wrote a book which was immediately taken off the

shelves --

Votescam -- The Stealing of America --

http://www.constitution.org/vote/votescam__.htm

Book is available here and there for about $3 -- but you should be able to read it at the

website.

11. Given the context is someone taking a hideously discriminatory broad-brush view on mental illness...
...Do you really need to do the same by pulling out that tired "mentally ill = Republican" meme that DUers seem to love so much?

By and large this place really doesn't get to throw many stones when it comes to attitudes about mental illness.

5. OMG
This "person"????? has no business representing anyone. I can't believe he would be so cavalier. That's unforgivable. What has happened to New Hampshire??? They used to be this little quiet, quaint state, that didn't seem to make any ripples in the news. Now it seems that somebody does or says something outlandish every other day.
