The Earth’s axis has shifted 10 cm following Japan earthquake
Source: The Total Collapse

The impact of the earthquake that hit Japan this morning shifted the earth’s rotation axis is nearly 10 inches. It’s the preliminary result of studies carried out by INGV, National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

IMPACT – The impact of this event on the axis of rotation, said INGV, was also much greater than that of the great Sumatra earthquake of 2004, which was 7 cm of linear and two thousandths of an arcsecond angle, and probably second only to Chile earthquake of 1960. The earthquake in Chile last year shifted the Earth’s axis of about 8 cm .

CLASSIFICATION FOR INTENSITY – The earthquake of 11 March 2011 stands at fifth place in the ranking of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded since the seismic surveys are accurate.

"Secular polar motion alters the actual latitude of almost all geodetic positions on the planet, very slowly changing latitude at a local rate. The change in latitude due to secular polar motion is very slow "

Annual Secular Polar Motion is the alteration in the position of the axis of rotation relative to the surface of the geoid.

38. Not much of anything, really
It's impressive insofar as it takes an incredible amount of power to shift the axis at all, but it's not the sort of thing we would be able to notice if it wasn't for the incredibly sensitive equipment we have these days. It'll have no discernible effect on much of anything we can notice on human scales.

76. It's not just 18 cm since 2004 - the axis is shifting all the time as isostatic rebound
continues (10 cm is about the annual shift from that), as mass moves around in body of the planet, and as mass is redistributed seasonally in the oceans and atmosphere.

What it means is that the rotation of the Earth traces out a very complicated wobble at a bunch of time scales, but it really only matters if you're relying on celestial navigation and need fraction-of-a-mile accuracy, keeping track of satellites, or doing other things that require extremely precise geodetic data...

10. 10 cm is pretty amazing!
Most that know the metric system won't think that's much, at least not until you mention that is for the whole of the planet, off-kilter now by a whopping 10 cm, and from just one earthquake!

Now, if it was that "10 inches" your link uses, which then contradicts itself with the 10 cm figure, that would likely have been a big enough quake to wipe out most if not all of Japan and surrounding island nations. The US will probably never go over to the metric system (thanks to, of all things, how we measure plots of land) but such confusions of measurements can lead to disastrous results in other fields (Mars Climate Orbiter, anyone?)

54. How about the increasing earthquakes since capitalism ... ??
The Pentagon Warning to Bush re Global Warming being a more serious threat to

US than "terrorism" mentioned increasing "earthquakes" as a consequence of

Global Warming -- among increases in other weather systems -- including

storms, hurricanes, cyclones and tornadoes. It mentioned "earthquakes" but

that's been scrubbed now.

Increase in droughts/floods, of course -- more chaotic weather conditions.

Global Warming is changing our weather systems -- El Nino and La Nina are part

of Global Warming -- they used to be rare weather evens -- once in every 1,000

or 2,000 years.

We've changed wind directions -- especially notable in California.

And while the Pentagon didn't mention volcanic activity, I would imagine that

will also be part of it.

No one can predict the compounding conditions of Global Warming --

89.  "Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and landslides are some of the additional..."
Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and landslides are some of the additional catastrophes that climate change and its rising sea levels and melting glaciers could bring, a geologist says.

http://www.livescience.com/7366-global-warming-spur-earthquakes-volcanoes.html

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2004/feb/22/usnews.theobserver

The latest revelations have triggered warnings from scientists that they no longer have the funds to keep a comprehensive track of climate change. Last week the head of the US's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Professor Jane Lubchenco, warned that the gathering of satellite data - crucial to predicting future climate changes - was now at "great risk" because America's ageing satellite fleet was not being replaced.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/jul/26/climate-change-obama-administration

Additionally Pentagon issued a Warning to W. Bush re Global Warming --

which originally included "earthquakes" -- it was later scrubbed.

I'd also suggest that volcanic activity should have been included in that warning.

You might also recall that during the Bush administration we saw numerous instances of lying

and falsifying of public documents -- such as a report on Global Warming and an EPA report

on air quality in NYC after 9/11 -- among many other lies.

30. Take these reports with a grain of salt.
Someone always reports the Earth's axis or rotational speed changes after big quakes. Experts will generally say that it's possible and likely, but that it's difficult to measure for sure because other factors overtake these effects. For example, the differences in snow coverage (water/ice accumulation on the ground and in the air) also affect the mass properties (and thus the motion characteristics) of the Earth throughout the year. Heck, there are even models that show the winds across the surface of the globe have an effect on any given day.

I'd question the motives of web sites that focus on doomsday and global collapse. It's not that they aren't capable of reporting true facts. But, it's how they frame it and what emphasis they put on it. Why is this 10 cm movement a big deal? What's the point, given that shifting wind and precipitation have a far greater effect?

37. "The big deal" is that a movement of 10cm by a planet
measuring 12,700+ km in diameter at all because of one earthquake is pretty impressive. And it's not some fraction of a millimeter; this is a measurement easily discernible to the naked eye. That's a big deal! :D

The movement of the mass offshore from Japan, something I saw on one of the BBC reports by a geologist was it measured about 500km by a few tens of km and all that moved (I think) 8m toward Japan. That's pretty impressive, too.

56. Remember that the dams and reservoirs built by our Army Corps of Engineers ...
over the past 60 years or so are impacting the rotation of the earth --

that was according to a NY Times report probably 20 years ago --

Many reasons for getting rid of the dams.

And little reason to ignore Global Warming and the impact it is already having --

Further, no one can predict how all of this will compound.

The earthquake in Chile last year sped up the Earth's rotation.

91. It's really not a big deal, but it sounds exciting. The axis varies naturally at a
number of different time scales, and this shift is about the same as what occurs gradually over a year or so.

It's still pretty interesting though, as it points to just how much mass was displaced over the space of a few minutes...
