They're calling it fascism where I live |
|
as I've mentioned here before, I come across and talk to a lot of different people in the course of my day.
people know what's going on in WI and other places in this nation.
They're calling it fascism where I live - Walker, the Gov. in Michigan - guys with grown kids, working men and women - these aren't folks who post on DU - but the view that I heard over and over today is that the American govt has slipped into outright fascism.
...and they're not making a distinction between parties all the time, but, of course, the Republican party does get the lion's share of the blame. However, Obama is coming in for a large amount of criticism too.
just thought I'd share because we often hear, on this sight, that the views here are from outliers - but what I'm hearing from everyday folks is a rejection of the path we're on.
They're talking about nonviolent resistance - no matter which party is trying to move this nation to fiat corporate rule.
And, to tell you the truth, this makes me happy to hear. People are not going to take this bullshit.

where I live they have absolutely NO IDEA that anything is going on in WI.
They DO think that our country has become fascist, but only because there's a black man in the white house.

2. Where were they when Junior was fucking us over? |
|
President Obama has done nothing in comparison to what Junior, Walker and other Republican Governers have done.
I agree with you that it's about time people wake up but we need to make sure that the anger is directed at the real culprits not someone who is convenient.

5. People were talking about it then, too |

I remember very well, and posted about it here at the time, hearing WWII veterans telling me that Bush wasn't just fascist - he reminded them of the Nazis.
but people thought that the election of Obama was going to change things for the better.
The American media deserves a large share of the blame for this moment in time because they have done nothing but catapult the propaganda into every American's living room.
If this is a tipping point - I think it's because the economy is so much worse, because the astroturfing teabagger party has been given so much press while the majority of people in this nation do not support their positions - and because we've had so many election cycles that are questionable - esp. Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004 - and people no longer think our nation's checks and balances are working.

6. Unfortunately the president |
|
hasn't done much in the way of pushback either. I've heard a lot about the good ideas the Republicans have contributed to the health care debate and deficit reduction, but not so much about their obvious efforts to bring the country to its knees. We knew what junior was when he was selected. We're still learning new things about Mr. Obama almost every day.

Yup. We knew we were screwed when Bush was selected. But we had no idea Obama would "look forward".

3. These Americans have been taught by Democratic Presidents |
|
FDR, John F Kennedy, Truman to name a few--to know and beware of Fascism developing in this country.
In the beltway, they confuse Fascism with Nazism. and go ballistic. Do not understand where so many people have been in this country over the past 50 years.

8. I know every time I post something here pointing out |
|
that what is happening is out and out naked fascism I get the usual crowd of nay-sayers he can't seem to see what is right in front of their face. Sorry, but I have been studying this for over thirty years and fascism has been a goal of Republicans for decades.
People really need to wake up before it is too late.

22. If the people understood their goal |

it would be unachievable. So the right is engaged in a massive 30 year old smoke screen.
So the dummies think the right's goal is to stop abortion, stop Obama from forcing sharia law on America and to stop Obama from taking their guns away.

'heartland.' People have been angry and frustrated yet didn't seem to have someone/something to focus that anger upon.....maybe now they will get a clue! I hope so.
The dots are getting pretty easy to connect!

I also think people were biding their time - trying to give Obama a chance to deal with things - and his continued appeasement of the right and the rich has brought people to the point of asking... wtf - that's not why we elected you.
But the Republican insistence on "my way or the highway," when that way includes selling this nation to the highest bidder - well, yeah, people see this corporate whoredom for what it is in total.
The midwest has suffered from democrats and republicans with NAFTA and outsourcing - I remember, in the 1990s, white collar workers were a lot more sanguine about losing union jobs.
now, not so much.

11. My husband had the tv on MSNBC the other night & he asked me, "Where is Obama |
|
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 10:20 PM by pacalo
in this?". I told him that many people on DU were asking the same thing. Politics isn't his favorite topic, but I was heartened that someone who watches from a distance could quickly assess the situation & understand that there's something wrong with this picture.
I told him that Obama knows we have nowhere else to go next election.

12. Someone said, I can't remember who |

said When fascism comes to America it will be bearing a Cross and wrap itself in the American flag. Yes, Facism/corporatism, the takeover of the government by corporations is now spreading from control of the Federal government, and now they are coming for the states. Peaceful resistance is something they cannot deal with. They want us to rise up in anger so they can crush us. But Gandhi and MLK taught us well :o)

16. hey, you're everyday folk! |
|
:)
the reason you hear that is that people who post on a political message board are self-selected - people who have a level of interest and awareness that compels them to pay attention and discuss things with others who share this interest.
and the truth is that lots and lots of people do not pay attention and do not want to know about what's going on, politically. lots of times that's because people feel powerless in the face of so much money and power that goes into influencing our elections and policy.
I wish I could give every single person who was at the capitol bldg in WI a huge, huge hug because, beyond fighting for all of our rights, their example has served to empower people - to see power in numbers - to see power in working people joining together - to see police refuse to kowtow to illegal actions - and they forced the hand of the Republicans with their move this week to ram through the legislation their Koch masters wanted.
to now see action against the bank - these are moments of living history that I am proud to see - it gives us all hope to see people fight back - nonviolently - against the abuse of power that is corporate America.
so, yeah, you're everyday folk and I am, too.
and so are others who don't post here but who have teachers in their families - who doesn't have a teacher in their family, I wonder?
going against teachers is a losing proposition in the long run because so many of them have done so much to positively influence so many lives - and they have a great networking organization.
it may be a long fight - but we the people are going to win. We are more powerful when we recognize and organize and act on this power.

because they now recognize it for what it is. And, like you say, they now know that both parties are responsible, Republicans more so, but still. Now we need solutions.
My number one solution is to STOP THE LAWLESSNESS! Investigate: the 2000 election, events leading up to 9/11, events leading up to the Iraq War, profiteering during the wars, irregularities during the 2004 election, war crimes including torture, Wall Street malfeasance and other assorted acts of treason. Prosecute those responsible to the absolute fullest extent. That would only be a start.
