A group opposing the Governor’s education policies and restrictions on public employee unions are talking a walk…to protest. People Organizing Wisconsin for Education and workers Rights (POWER) began a trek-by-foot this morning in Milwaukee and plan to reach the state Capitol Sunday.
Chris Fons, a teacher with the group, says they’ve been holding rallies every week but wanted to do something different to continue their momentum. They chose a model in the tradition of Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi, who provided inspiration by “doing something that took a little effort.”
POWER opposes the collective bargaining restrictions in the budget repair bill and Governor Walker’s expansion of Milwaukee school choice in his next biennial budget.
The group has broken up the walk into three shifts, Milwaukee-to-Concord, Concord-to-Deerfield and Deerfield to the Capitol. Fons is encouraging others to join them on the trip.
