How long does it take the Pacific Jet Stream to move from Fukushima to, say, Los Angeles?
I had tried to find this out late last night but I couldn't get even a general answer. Anyone have an idea?

4. three days actually, Japan used it for bombs in WW 2
I just looked it up, here is an article on wikipedia, it took "fire" balloons 3 days to go from Japan to West coast USA by jet stream.

3. The average speed is 150 to 300 miles an hour.
The shortest distance between fukushima and LA is 6000 miles, but the jet streem meanders a bit. At the slowest speed, it will take something between 2.5 to 3 days.

7. Those speeds are a bit high - the winter average for the polar front jet stream overall is ~100 mph
The 300+ mph number would be particularly high local speeds in the fastest jet streaks.

SFSU has a very nice page of jet stream plots for North America: http://squall.sfsu.edu/crws/jetstream.html

10. Evidently that map is a hoax.

According to this blogger and other sites:

Also, if you go to the website of Australian Radiation Services, the purported source (which you linked to), you will not find any sign of the map there.

16. And the blogger blames Al Gore for the quake?
To scare people into alternative energy?

Sounds like a whacko to me.

13. It is likelier to move air to B.C., Oregon and Washington
And that is much closer too, so it happens faster.
