Second Japanese Nuclear Reactor At Risk of Exploding
Source: VOA

Nuclear safety agency says the cooling system has stopped working at the Fukushima number three reactor

Japan's nuclear safety agency says there is an emergency at another reactor at a quake-hit power plant.

Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said Sunday that the cooling system at the number three reactor at the Fukushima nuclear plant has stopped working and risked a possible explosion following a blast Saturday at the plant's number one reactor.

VOA reporters close to the plant say aftershocks are still rocking the area, more than 24 hours after the original 8.9-magnitude jolt and tsunami hit on Friday afternoon, local time.

1. This is what they consider protective gear for radiation :

4. That's actually very effective.
Protecting against alpha and beta particles. You only need a thin layer of paper to stop them.

6. Paper protects against radioactive cesium and radioactive iodine?
That is what they said they have been measuring around the reactors.

7. Paper will stop radioactive particles.
From either making contact with the skin or being taken in through orifices.

The penetration power of these radioactive particles is relatively low. Like I said, a sheet of paper can not only block the particle but also shield against ionizing radiation.

Alpha particles are only really a threat if they are ingested. Beta particles can burn the skin with direct contact.

17. Cecium and radioactive iodine=alpha or beta particles? Or..?
I know so little about this stuff, since you seem to know about it, I pester you for information.

18. Beta particles.
Radioactive nuclei from elements like I-131 emit beta particles.

Alpha particles are essentially ionized helium.

16. Not much different from how workers handle enriched uranium:

Yep, rubber gloves are good enough to stop the radiation. The dust and particles that get inhaled or ingested are a much bigger problem.

5. Misleading subject. The first reactor did not explode and there isnt a danger of the second reactor
exploding. The explosion was from the hydrogen gas igniting that was vented to relieve the reactor pressure. Not a good thing but a long, long way from a reactor explosion.

8. But you don't want a meltdown in a MOX reactor do you?
Blowing the outer container does make cooling just a touch more difficult.

12. Of course not. And it isnt impossible that the reactor itself could explode. But this article is
misleading. I am not pro-nuclear power. I just dont like misleading stories.

Also, I dont think the out building effects the reactor cooling.

13. I have read those reports and that is not good. Hopefully, they can stop the temp increase before
it explodes.

15. OP was quoting the headline of the link.

You are right..the 2nd reactor is not reported to be at risk.
The THIRD reactor is.

And the article says:

Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said Sunday that the cooling system at the number three reactor at the Fukushima nuclear plant has stopped working and risked a possible explosion following a blast Saturday at the plant's number one reactor.

20. I am hoping they mean an explosion similar to the other plant in lieu of the reactor
exploding.
