Broadcaster Pat Robertson questions harsh pot laws

RICHMOND, Va. – Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson told his "700 Club" audience that harsh penalties for marijuana possession are costly for the nation and damaging to young people, but a spokesman said Thursday he was not calling for decriminalizing pot.

Robertson, 80, made the comments on the Christian Broadcasting Network in the context of faith-based approaches to treating offenders, the spokesman said.

"Dr. Robertson unequivocally stated that he is against the use of illegal drugs," Chris Roslan wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

The comments, however, were widely interpreted on several websites as an endorsement by the Christian Coalition founder of legalizing marijuana. They were celebrated by NORML, a group that advocates legalization of the drug.

2. I don't favor drug or alcohol use.

But I voted to decriminalize pot when a ballot initiative came up for a vote in my state, the initiative passed. I would favor a law change that allowed parents to serve their children alcohol and allow their children to be served in their presence in restaurants if controls for that privilege were strong enough to prevent abuse. I voted for the pot initiative because I do not feel that a teenager or young person that gets caught with an ounce or two of pot should have their lives limited in the way that a criminal record limits opportunities. I would vote for parents responsibly serving their children alcohol at home and in public because that power in the hands of responsible parents will take away the mystery that children have concerning alcohol and it's uses and relative importance to other pursuits.
