33. Hours earlier MSNBC host said just the opposite
MSNBC had Jack Spencer from the right wing Heritage Foundation as a nuclear expert this morning and while the explosion video was playing said that this proves how safe nuclear power is. ***My WTF??? moment***

There are ten at that site? Seven under distress? What if they all proceed to meltdown?

32. Once fission is halted heat output of a reactor will only decline.
So time is a good thing. The longer the pumps remain operation the cooler the reactor core becomes. Eventually in about 3-4 days the fuel no longer has enough thermal energy to melt through the RPV (reactor pressure vessel).

The bad news with Reactor #1 is the pumps failed 1 hour into shutdown (when reactor is still very hot) likely from the Tsunami wave.

Edited on Sat Mar-12-11 10:33 PM by roamer65
This has gone beyond the TMI disaster, which was level 5.

They can hide this until the radiation shows up on Russian detectors. The Russians will spill the beans.

a thread I started lecturing me about how small the chances of a meltdown are and how I should take a tour of my local nuclear plant to ease my mind.

This reactor is running plutonium enriched MO fuel. Expect much more radiation output from it.

20. So a partial meltdown at #1 last night. #3 has rods exposed by 3 meters
and 2 is now also in meltdown?

Is this all current? I've been away much of the day.

Nuclear power is SAFE I tells ya... "Many liberals fear nuclear power the way (and for the same reasons) cons fear muslims" http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=620088&mesg_id=621578

Seems the people that were castigating those of us last night are in need of a re-think.

This is horrible news coming out of Japan.
