From the mouth of a teabagger: "people who never worked can get unemployment insurance" |
|
Edited on Sat Mar-12-11 10:37 PM by Dawson Leery
:wtf: And we all know where he got this propaganda from.
The teabagger in question is a cashier at the supermarket. Certainly no one with privilege.
In addition, this teabagger believes the that there was a government takeover of health care (hardly) and is tired of "welfare cheats". So I asked him his views about corporate welfare such as subsidies for the oil industry and real estate tax exemptions for big box stores such as Wal-Mart. He walked away blabbing nonsense about Limbaugh's mythological "lazy people" who don't want to work.
Please discuss! :kick:

Facts and logic simply don't get past the construct they have built to maintain their world view as being "right".

4. It's really unemployment INSURANCE that is run by the state... |
|
You have to have skin in the game in order to be insured. And you have to have worked at least 2 Quarters, which will vary fro state to state...

8. There are very clear cut rules in each state laying out the things |
|
that must be met in order to draw any unemployment. I am most familiar with the rules in Texas, at one time I was a Tax auditor for the the Texas Employment Commission, now the Texas Workforce Commission. In order to draw unemployment in the State of Texas, one must have worked in the previous five quarters, your unemployment benefit would depend on the amount of money you made in the first four of those five quarters. The Employment commission sends a letter to your last employer to let them know that you have filed so that they can respond if you were fired for cause, or you quit. Also because any benefit paid to you will cause a future change in the rate that the employer must pay on all employees up to a set cap. Anyway, someone who has not had employment can not draw unemployment. The only way one can be eligible for unemployment is if they had been employed and lost their job. Also, a person who files for unemployment must undertake an active job search with reporting in weekly as to where they have applied for work. This is a log which must be kept and it subject to verification by the Employment commission, the person applying must be able to work, (not sick, or disabled) And can not turn down a job that pays at least 40% of the last job held or minimum wage which ever is highest.
Anyone who states that a person who has not had a job can draw unemployment has been smoking something that is not legal.

16. This is THE single biggest problem in the U.S. |
|
The corporatists have waged a p.r. campaign for decades to convince people that somebody else is getting more than they deserve. Racism is at the root of a lot of it. Anti-immigration bigotry. Class resentment. Anti-Muslim paranoia. Anything that can ramp up fear and resentment becomes a tool to keep people divided and distracted from the real culprits, who are the handful of people with 99% of the power and resources.
Propaganda.

27. Yep. Which is why I find it doubly distrubing when people disparage history degrees around DU |
|
Doesn't it make sense? Get rid of all liberal arts and people won't even be aware that the same old tactics have been used over and over again throughout history.
Instead, even liberals will jump on the "get a business degree" bandwagon, never even thinking about what will be lost once they remove all general studies from college curricula.

29. When I TA'ed a lifetime ago (late 80s), 25% of the entering first-year |

class pre-declared as business majors. Before setting foot in a single college class, mind you. Today, 20 years later, the streets are littered with the walking carcasses of those who took on massive student loan debts to major in business only to graduate into an economy with no jobs.
I'd like to say the joke is on those grads for placing careerism above things like critical thinking or something as quaint as a well-rounded education. But I think the real culprits are the institutions of higher education who became, what, something like high-priced consorts for big business.
You will never, repeat NEVER, hear me counsel anyone to enter higher education for a business degree. Ugh. Instead, I counsel people to enter higher education to get an education, an asset that will last them for life.

That kind of stupidity and illogic is stunning and would leave me speechless. And it's frightening when you see how they insist that everyone believe the way they do.
They stopped noticing the world around them and only believed what the Koch media tells them, which we can lay at the feet of Rush and his ilk.
But I suspect the problem goes much further back. Maybe they grew up fundie and left their brains at the altar or whatever. Maybe they're on prescription drugs or suffering auto intoxication.
Damn, but you've got a lot of guts arguing with a rabid dittohead. They foam at the mouth and they bite.
What's really chilling when you see their droppings online is how confident they are, but the meme boosts their belief system. They don't take to time to reason things out, in fact they see you as weak because you tried to inform them.
I'm sure this knucklehead thinks he walked all over you.

26. I have often wondered about mental illness in cases like this. |
|
Or, at the very least, substance abuse issues.
I'm not saying someone with views that are more in keeping with mine might not suffer this way as well; it just seems there are a lot more right-leaning sources for people like this to get their "fix".

Just one person he actually knows for a fact is collecting unemployment and has never worked.
A phone number, a name, anything.
"Those that assert, must first prove."
He can't. It's impossible. His tin god Limbaugh couldn't produce one.
When pressed like that, most of them resort to anger because they got called on it.

30. And people who aren't even sick can get disability. |
|
Whenever I hear people say stuff like this it usually turns out that they are talking out of their butt. They know of somebody's friends sister - blah blah blah and it actually turns out that they don't know anything at all.
No, you can't get unemployment compensation unless you have worked in the past year, and worked quite a bit.
No, you can't get disability income without a doctor's approval, and you have to have a pretty damn good reason, and usually you get turned down the first couple of times you apply. They don't just give it away.

I looked into it when I thought corporate America was going to steal my pension (they still might). The total I qualified for was exactly $0.00. Some food credits, yes, but money, no.
The conservative's dream is a return to the cold, cold days of "if you don't work, you don't eat", and it's getting there. They long for the day people line up at the mall entrance begging to shine their shoes for a quarter so they can spit in their face and say "no".
That's how they'll know they've arrived.

33. Like teabagger cashiers who complain about food stamps |
|
A relative of mine has posted snarky remarks on FB about people who supposedly buy luxury food items with food stamps.
I've also noticed LTTE from cashiers complaining that the people on food stamps eat better than they do, and they recount stories of people buying cakes, expensive seafood, etc. with food stamps.
I'm guessing most of these are second-hand stories passed around as gospel truth from one cashier to another--and I can see how it might be annoying to stand on your feet for hours at a checkout stand to put food on the table, and see people getting "free" food.
but I always wonder, do these folks realize that a good chunk of their store's income comes from food stamps? And that without that income, the store would probably lay off a few workers?
Also, I believe in many states that food stamp recipients aren't necessarily on welfare; I think many are working poor.
