12. Rueters just said this: Quake-hit Japan nuclear plant faces new threat
By Chris Meyers and Kim Kyung-hoon
SENDAI, Japan | Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:48am IST

http://in.reuters.com/article/2011/03/13/idINIndia-55522720110313

SENDAI, Japan (Reuters) - Japan faced a fresh radiation threat at an earthquake-crippled nuclear plant on Sunday after the cooling system failed at a second reactor in what could be the world's worst nuclear disaster in 25 years.

The previous day, thousands were evacuated following an explosion and leak from the facility's No. 1 reactor in Fukushima, 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo.

Strong aftershocks continued to shake Japan's main island as the desperate search pressed on for survivors from Friday massive earthquake and tsunami and the death toll was expected to rise. Media reports say it is likely to exceed 1,800.

(and then they say this...)

Nuclear plant operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) said radiation levels around the Fukushima Daiichi plant had risen above the safety limit but it did not mean an "immediate threat" to human health.

What are we supposed to believe?

The NYT also ran it, as well as the LA Times, and a slew of Mexican papers.

13. So I've heard mention of #1, #2, and #3 -- what's the official status of each?
This reminds me of the BP spill. We're getting an official assessment (don't worry, under control) but the people who are there and also understand what's really happening are going whoa, wait just a minute...

Do we KNOW anything about any of them yet?

14. One partial meltdown
3 partial meltdown.

one has had 100% releases, per the company that runs it, that issue with that little building going poof, but they have not lost containment... three, they are venting... but they have not lost containment.

I was readying some really scary shit on the Reuters blog a second ago, that is too horrible to comprehend... one could melt through the vessel... which could make Chernobyl look like a walk in park, BUT, for the moment take that with a grain of Cesium.

Let's just say the industry can kiss that renaissance good bye

18. "...take that with a grain of Cesium."

I sure hope they re-think the "safe nuclear" approach. You don't need an earthquake to have an accident, but I'm expecting that to be a selling point -- we'll put them in earthquake-free zones! There is no such thing.

I heard a guy from nonukes.org saying the ones in CA that are THIS CLOSE to a fault, are only "safe" up to a 7.3. The quakes seem to be getting more powerful and lasting so much longer. The last big one here I was thinking "this is really lasting a long time..." and I don't know about the one in Japan, but I heard a local guy on the radio who's been living there for several years say that after about a MINUTE, they started becoming a little concerned...
