9. the only one ever canceled... WOW
From you link:

In June 1979, about 500 people were arrested for protesting about construction of the Black Fox Nuclear Power Plant. In 1982, after nine years of court and legal challenges by Carrie Barefoot Dickerson and the Citizen's Action for Safe Energy (CASE) group, all plans were abandoned and no complex was ever built. It was the only nuclear power plant in the US to be canceled by a combination of legal and citizen action after construction had started.<1><2>

19. Thankfully
I am closer to Indian Point than any of the coal fired plants in NY. The nearest coal fired one is in NJ which is 15 miles away. Indian point is 40 miles away.

15. Just a note
That appears to cover commercial power facilities only. There are also test reactor sites, in http://www.localnews8.com/news/27175735/detail.html">my state as well as others, I'm sure.

Chernobyl.

On 26 April 1986, at 01:23 a.m. (UTC+3), reactor four suffered a catastrophic power increase, leading to explosions in the core. This dispersed large quantities of radioactive fuel and core materials into the atmosphere<6>73 and ignited the combustible graphite moderator. The burning graphite moderator increased the emission of radioactive particles, carried by the smoke, as the reactor had not been contained by any kind of hard containment vessel (unlike all Western plants).

be able to compare as those facilities had a containment vessel.

Although, I wasn't looking to compare.

I was looking to inform people how close they were to a nuclear facility.

Do you find something wrong with that?

18. No
I really don't have a dog in this fight. I am, admittedly, complacent on the issue of reactors for energy. I know I like my lights to come on when I flip the switch. I know there is inherent danger in many sources of power. I like wind power, but alas there is controversy and those who oppose that too. The opposers seem to also like lights in their homes and blowers on their furnaces and A/C units.

21. There is nothing wrong with an informed populace and most people don't
want to die of radiation poisoning.

There is a risk and it is up to individual people to estimate those risks themselves and give our governments our stamp of approval or not.

But you see, it's not really up to people how they get/consume energy.

It is pre-determined by those most flush with cash.

Unless we truly put our foot down, which it appears many are not ready to do that.

It might take an episode like what is occuring in Japan for people to get it. And that is not something I wish or hope for.

24. A more relevant comparison would be...
A comparison of Fukushima reactors to GE's Mark 1 reactors in the US. Here's a list:
