Note also the article's obligatory agreeing comments by other Wall Street stooges who are meant to be considered by the reader as "experts". Example #3,423 of how the Mainstream Media is nothing more than a mouthpiece for Wall Street

Welfare State: Handouts Make Up One-Third of U.S. Wages

Published: Tuesday, 8 Mar 2011 | 3:59 PM ET
By: John Melloy
Executive Producer, Fast Money

Government payouts—including Social Security, Medicare and unemployment insurance—make up more than a third of total wages and salaries of the U.S. population, a record figure that will only increase if action isn’t taken before the majority of Baby Boomers enter retirement.

“You’ve got to cut back government spending and the Republicans will run on this platform leading up to next year’s election,” said Joe Terranova, Chief Market Strategist for Virtus Investment Partners and a “Fast Money” trader.

Terranova noted some sort of opt out for social security or even raising the retirement age.

But the country may not be ready for these tough choices, even though economists like Schnapp say something will have to be done to avoid a significant economic crisis.

2. Note how MSM is almost pure propaganda nowdays.
We need to teach our children/grandchildren not to trust it, and where to find real news.

3. Gee, I guess all that money I have paid into it for 40+ years means I will be on welfare.
It's all about privatization. Wall Street and the GOP want to get their hands on Social Security.

8. That misinformation needs to be countered
I love how repukes spin that it is peachy to deny workers unemployment and social security, programs workers pay into and justly deserve. And that it's ok to break the promise of pensions but not the contracts paying wall street bonuses.

9. Social Security taxes are part of our wages. Deducted directly from paychecks.
Medicare is part of our wages. Deducted directly from paychecks.
Unemployment is part of our wages. Employer considers it part of employee wages even though not deducted directly from paycheck.

Remember when "journalists" report on the hourly wages of employees? They have some jackass economist calculate the cost of each employee's hourly wages. Sometimes they even include the cost of providing parking, cafeterias, restrooms, nurses, snow plowing parking lots, etc.

10. Workers have paid trillions more than has been paid out...
The scam and crime is that the rich are now trying to welch on the debt owed to workers.
