Question about Craigslist scams
I have something listed for sale. Is this a scam? I do live about 4 hours from the area.

Dear xxxx,

Thanks for the swift response, just to let you know that am okay with the condition and price of the item, am ready for its purchase and am willing to add extra $10 so that you can keep it in my favor. My form of payment will be by sending you Check via UPS 1/2days delivery.

I'll be responsible for the pick-up and the movers/pick up money will be included in your payment to avoid delay and to enable movers to schedule an appropriate time for the pick-up at your location after check has been cashed.

I would have really love to come for the viewing but due to my work frame that might not be possible. kindly get back to me with your full name and address including your cell and land number so i can make out payment to you.

Regards
Emmanuel

1. It's an old scam

They'll send you a fake check. Worse yet, the bank will hold you liable if you cash it and it fails to clear (and may even file charges against you).

20. Is that common, for banks to charge you for a bad check?
I never knew they did that, I can certainly see them starting to do that in the face of people trying to pass bad checks.

24. Banks used to be forgiving
but nowadays if a check or money order is cashed and comes back as a counterfeit, they will go after whoever gave it to them, not the criminal who forged the check. The criminal will be dealt with when/if they get caught.

2. Total scam. I've received the exact same message for artwork I sell on another site.
This one has been going around for awhile. Stay away! Don't even respond.

This is almost certainly a scam.

5. scam.
It seems if the price of your item is high, the scammers come out. Usual people, would just email and say "do you still have it?" all of these wordy replies are bullshit. I tried to sell my art and was accosted by fake scamming bullshit.

9. you get some
that don't even say anything that makes sense. Those are just intended to get you to respond for clarification so they can get your real email for a spam list.

10. If you feel suspicious demand Cash, Paypal or USPS Money Order.
Any other type of payment is suspect. Document the movers receiving the item so you have proof the item was given to him if he claims he was ripped off. Don't give more personal info than needed for the transaction. Give only name and address at most... maybe cell number (he already has your email). Better yet, ask for the money to pay the moving service of his choice and YOU arrange the moving to HIS address. Don't ever be alone at home alone with strange people/workers if you can't defend yourself.

14. Don't use your home address unless absolutely necessary.
Meet in a neutral place and bring a "friend". They don't get my cell number until right before we meet, either--and whenever possible I get them to just email since that comes through on my phone.

16. Well of course...
The item in question here requires movers... so it probably must be picked up at the home.

But I totally agree meeting at neutral places. I don't even use my whole name - mayby even just give 'em a nickname. I prefer fast food restaraunt parking lots. I sold a Desert Eagle .50 caliber at Subway once, an AR15 rifle at Wendy's and bought a 12ga Shoutgun at mcDonalds. I would never meet up for a sale at my private residence.

22. Having sold arms before...
I only sell to members of a certain forum in our state, never to a complete stranger. But that's just me--am a bit picky to keep things straight. Our forum has very strict rules about sales and it helps to keep us safe as well as weeding out impulsive buyers.

11. Any response which talks about "the item" is a scam.
I won't respond to emails which don't clearly refer to the item I'm selling or ask relevant questions about it.

12. Old as the Craigslist hills.
I sell and buy things on CL each week to make extra $$, payment must always be done in person and cash only (expect me to use a money marker too).

15. Three words
"cash on pickup"

Don't give the other guy an opportunity to be dishonest, you never know when you may be dealing with someone who works in the financial sector.

even refers to this e-mail on their site. Somewhere in their introduction to Craigslist section there's a list of common scams.

23. Exactly.
My father went through a period of time where he was trying to sell things on CL and kept getting scam emails. Eventually my sister and I had to shut him down because he became such a big target and he was so frustrated, but we did become much more adept at identifying the scammers.

21. I used them to pay a state education loan, they had no method to make
electronic payments all I could do to pay was mail something a MO, or check.

Beyond that I've still got the checks I ordered like 10 years ago and 2 bank names past that were still accepted post the 1st bank name change, looks like they'll work post 2nd name change not that I have any use for them.
