Video of the ground cracking and shifting
in a park near Chiba, Japan.
Crazy the way the cracks open and shift, fill with water and then gurgle.

1. Was the water from pipes breaking underneath or what?
I wonder if anyone knows for sure.

3. I don't think so. Reclaimed land.
Edited on Sun Mar-13-11 12:41 PM by godai
He mentions that it is reclaimed land, which is not that solid. I think that water was from under the surface. Wierd how the crack moved back and forth. That was a large chunk of earth moving.

4. The aftershocks are so powerful things could get much worse.
I've seen videos of landfills where the ground liquefies...
The earth is a powerful thing.

Just another reason why I will never use a subway in an earthquake zone...

5. Liquifaction causing the water
It's reclaimed land. basically the movement and settling of the ground caused by the quake is squeezing out water from below the water table, and the only place for it to go is up.

7. one of the worst effects of land so close to water is liquification
of the ground. It turns to water and anything on it falls in and drowns. We lost a bunch of people during the Good Friday earthquake due to this happening. It happens a lot in earthquakes in Japan. We have a drive to Anchorage that shows this nicely. There is a stretch of trees that sunk and when the ground solidified again, there were trapped and died. They are still there, dead trees sticking out of the ground.

Our earthquake was stronger by many diameters and lasted five and a half MINUTES. That is what the earthquakes are like in this part of the world of which Japan is part of. Imagine what would happen if this had been a longer quake. Even a small quake lasting long enough can be a horror much worse than this. God bless Japan and her people. I just can hardly take it in.

10. I live in Coos Bay and the entire downtown
is built upon sand and fill, hence the former Marshfield. I know what would happen if we got a shaker here, the end of downtown...

13. my dad was born in Coos Bay during the depression and his
dad, my grandpa got blackballed there for trying to organize railroad unions. He walked miles on the tracks to other towns to do day labor because of it and my dad hated that town because of it. Funny, the past. I hope to god people run for it if there is one. This swallowed children and other people whole during the big one. By the way, I LOVE THE COAST. Hugs.

8. Looked like liquification of the earth
What the authorities in the Pacific NW always warn about. Not good if it happens under an elevated road.

I wouldn't have stayed still, either. :scared: It's amazing he kept filming and seemed so calm.

11. I saw another video similar to this on CNN and all I could think was don't stand there!
I just kept waiting for a big sink hole to open up. In this day of people wanting to have videos and pics of everything for the internet I think they forget they need to worry about their safety.

Heard about a guy who went to the ocean up around Klamath River to take pics of tsunami and he got swept out to sea and was reported missing.

12. Wild!
The water squirting through and the waves motion of the earth, wow!
when he talks about that sick, loopy feeling, i remember feeling that in the Loma Prieta... ugh seasick almost, then it mixes with fear and you try not to freak out...

Just goes to show ya that the earth isn't as stable as we think, is it?
