16. It's isn't the emergency that providing such great comic material...
It's the nuclear industry shills that are comical.

Oh, and BTW, until this event I was in favor of nuclear energy. Not anymore.

15. Real Information on the various Plants from the BBC
Your information is somewhat stale I'm afraid, and contains no links, no details, - just hearsay and hysteria.

Yes there are problems and "A State of Emergency' must be declared whenever there is any malfunction of any of the equipment - it does not mean the end of the world is nigh and we should all panic.

Fukushima-Daiichi #3 continues to be a big problem but, for the moment, is stable (whatever that means)

#
2142: Japanese authorities have told the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, that radioactivity levels "at the site boundary" of the Onagawa nuclear power plant have returned to normal, Reuters reports. A state of emergency was declared at the site on Sunday after radioactivity readings exceeding allowed levels in the area.

#
1721: More on the Tokai nuclear power plant: A report submitted to the Ibaraki prefectural government by the Japan Atomic Power Company said that one of the two pumps being used to cool the water of a suppression pool for the plant's nuclear reactor had stopped working, according to the Kyodo news agency. However, the other pump was still working and there was no problem with cooling the reactor, the prefectural government said. All control rods were set in completely at the reactor, it added.
#
1749: A spokesman for the Japan Atomic Power Company has explained that one of the cooling system pumps at its Tokai nuclear power plant failed because of the tsunami. "We then manually stopped one of our cooling systems," Masao Nakano told the AFP news agency. "But the other cooling systems and other pumps are working well, and temperatures of the reactor have continued to fall smoothly."
#
1702: The Japan Atomic Power Company has said the cooling system of a reactor at its Tokai nuclear power plant is working, although two of the three diesel power generators used for cooling are out of order, the Reuters news agency reports. The plant, about 120km (75 miles) north of Tokyo in Ibaraki prefecture, was automatically shut down after Friday's earthquake.

Real, regularly updated and non hysterical information can be found at the BBC 'Earthquake Live' website for those interested in factual reporting:

21. #1: it's sourced. that allows people to go to the source & check it out.
rather than something "heard on the way home".

#2: it's not accompanied by hysterical personal commentary & cassandra-like predictions.

23. But it may be inaccurate, hysteria or no... No? I mean, even right now there's
a guy on CNN telling me everything is rosy, even though they're having to pump in sea water, which is a last-ditch effort to cool the core. Turns our he's an industry shill. According to him, I could heat my dinner up on that core and I'd be OK. Am I supposed to believe him because it is sourced?

Edited on Sun Mar-13-11 05:29 PM by Hannah Bell
you find accompanied by personal rants.

sea water will cool the core. it's "last-ditch" because it will make the reactor inoperable. i don't know what your problem is. i prefer saving people rather than reactors.

22. Oh, I don't know...maybe it is because they are the most revered
news station in the world? They have this weird habit of posting constant updates that correct any errors in earlier reports too - bizarre isn't it?

However, if you'd rather get your news from someone listening to an hours old report while driving in their car, and can provide no details or clear sources - have at it.

28. And the number of people killed in collisions between 2 747s was zero.. until Tenerife.
The fact is, that nuclear disasters have the potential to be really, really, really bad. Obviously a lot of "worst case it'll never happen" scenarios have managed to come true in the past several days, pertaining to these plants. This is already a major nuclear disaster, the question is now whether the reactor containment vessels will hold.

I really, really, really hope they do.
