Just got my Christmas present, a Made in USA Oreck Vacuum.
Went to the Oreck store and was helped by an honest-to-God salesman who helped us pick out the model best for our needs. We even got to test it out!

Our vacuum comes with a six year warranty and once-a-year maintenance for the next six years is included!

Not only does it vacuum like a dream, but our purchase supports at least two American jobs (assembly & sales/service).

I've been wanting one for years and I'm so thrilled to finally have one.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone else out there is still looking for a gift that supports American jobs.

:hi:

We bought it because it was made in the USA. LOVE my Oreck. ENJOY!

12. Thanks! We will.
I had one years ago and stupidly got rid of it during the bag-less craze. Bad move. Those vacuums don't even compare to Orecks. In fact, the salesman had a couple of Dysons in the back he was trying to fix for people.

I own a Dyson, it's been faithful to us for 6 years.

How did your vacuum bite the dust?

17. I have my mother's old Electrolux
She gave it to me when she bought a new one several years ago. She bought the one I have when we were still living in upstate New York so it's at least 47 years old. Still does a great job, though the power attachment did die a couple years ago and there are some signs of wear in the hose.

the brushes on the motor once and that's about it ...

38. I have a 1974-model Electrolux
I found it abandoned in an apartment I used to live in a number of years ago. It didn't work but I took it apart and fixed it and I have been using it ever since. Made in Greenwich, Conn., USA if the printing on it is accurate!

40. We've got a 23 year old Electrolux cansiter - still kicking - same bags from 1950 on.
Well, there were a handful of models in the 70's or something that don't use the same bag. It sure makes figuring out which one to buy easy - THAT one.

And this poor thing has been steadily abused by dog and cat fur (of which there is an ample supply) the entire time. We know the sound of the bag being full by the change in pitch and that sucker will fill a bag damn tightly! I don't know if they're still made in the US, but if they are I'll look no further when it is time to replace this one.

15. Production moves to Malaysia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyson_%28company%29

Production moves to Malaysia

Initially, all Dyson vacuum cleaners and washing machines were made in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. When Dyson was at an attempt to expand the company for more production of vacuum cleaners, Dyson requested planning permission. The planning permit failed so in 2002, the company transferred vacuum cleaner production to Malaysia As Dyson was the major manufacturing company in Wiltshire outside Swindon, this move aroused some controversy, although planning permission to expand the Malmesbury site had been refused, which Dyson cited as a major reason for it to look elsewhere. A year later, washing machine production was also moved to Malaysia.

Although nearly 800 manufacturing jobs were lost, Dyson states that the cost savings from transferring production to Malaysia enabled investment in R&D at Malmesbury head office, and that the company employs more people in the UK than before the move to Malaysia.<6>

28. I wonder where his people at R&D are from. H1-B probably
I highly doubt the have 800 engineers in Malmesbury. And I'll never buy one of his overpriced pieces of shit. I still use a made in the US of A upright Hoover from the 80's that they STILL make bags and belts for.

8. The XL Gold
It only weighs 9 lbs. and is so light to push around. And they threw in a hand vacuum with all of the attachments as part of a holiday promotion.

I may be a bit strange, but I get really excited by household appliances. Jewelry, not so much.

9. Well, that was pretty damn selfish. Jesus.
That Oreck, though made in the USA, is likely going to not need a repair for years and years. Therefore, since that damn thing will run forever without problems, you're keeping Chinese sweatshop workers from having the job stability of knowing that through planned obsolescence you won't need to buy another 10 shitty vacs in the next 10 years.

Sometimes I'm at a loss with this place.

16. Yeah, well they've still got us in a corner with shoes and irons.
We need to replace our made in China $70 Shark iron that literally caught on fire three months after we bought it.

I can't find a single iron that I can confirm is made in the USA, but I did find a Rowenta that's made in Germany so I think we'll be going with that.

Shoes, unfortunately, often seem like a lost cause.

The number of people that blurted out vacuum purchase choices without giving a shit about where those vacuums were manufactured. I await the next US economy sucks thread, or the next outsourcing thread, or the next blood sucking big banks thread. But of weary mien, I look directly into the eyes of thine real enemy.

18. Another US made vacuum is Riccar.
I know it sounds Japanese or something but it is made in the US, Missouri, I think. It is excellent, one of the best I've ever had. It is only sold in vacuum cleaner stores, (no Lowes, Walmart, dept. store, etc.). It was a reasonable price, has an excellent disposable bag, has strong suction, and also can be used on floors as well as carpet. (and not too heavy).

23. I had my Oreck 7 years and just got a new Dyson Animal -
they are supposed to be even better for dog hair. We'll see, I have to say the Oreck is a very good vacuum and very lightweight. I also love the small vac they give away with it (if they still do that..) - it's an awesome little thing that you can carry around the house. Absolutely love it and it's still going strong.

much better picking up the dog hair than the Animal advertised to be superior. It wasn't.

Because we hang ornaments off of them. Even using a ladder, it's so light and easy to handle.

29. Not sure about that, but they've got some good holiday deals going on right now.
We could have gotten the XL Element + a hand vac with tons of attachments + a cordless iron for $299. Pretty good deal. But we have a lot of pets at home so we opted for a stronger and bit more expensive model.

31. $300 seems kinda pricey to me
For the most part, the cheapo $50 models work okay for me, but I am not that fussy a housekeeper.

Supposedly the Simplicity vacuum is made in St. James, Missouri, but I don't know what that costs.

33. They are pricey, that's the point.
It may cost more to support American jobs, but you get a better product and service in return (and a stronger American economy). Products like vacuums used to be an investment, rather than a disposable appliance. We wanted to get back to that.

37. my cheapo vacuum is at least 10 years old
I also bought one for work, just to prove a point. We had these other $150 vacuums that kept breaking, so when mine broke I bought a cheapo to use at work and it lasted for at least nine months, while two of the others broke, even though I was doing more vacuuming than others because I worked full time. I wanted to prove that we'd be better off using cheaper vacuums at work. And replacing motors was costing $50 plus labor, so a $50 vacuum seemed like a better deal. But the new ones seem to be sturdier now, at least we are not replacing motors so much. We are rough on them at work though, vacuuming about 10,000 square feet every day, about 350 days a year.

30. I had the larger one and didn't use
it much so gave it to a friend. The little shoulder one I use all the time. I have all wood floors and only rugs at the doors. I love it, nothing compares. The little vacuum picks up even dog hair, and my dog has lots of hair! It's very lightweight. It's going on 12yrs old. The cord is getting a little brittle and may need to be replaced but otherwise it works well.

While the Oreck had better suction, the Dyson is far more maneuverable and easier on her back.

34. Well, if your Dyson ever goes (which it probably will)....
(the filters on those bagless vacuums can be infuriating), the Oreck store will fix it. Also, Oreck also now makes a pivoting vacuum. We got to try it out tonight. It pivots and is still slim enough to get under the sofa. Pretty cool, but more than what we needed.
