Unbelievable picture of Tsunami damage on MSNBC.com
O.K. I'll bite, how do you get this ship righted and back into the ocean?

3. So do you just take a torch and take it apart?
Edited on Sun Mar-13-11 08:58 PM by Skip_In_Boulder
I mean clearly you can't just leave it there.

6. I'll ask the Arab League to intervene.
I have no idea how you would take that thing apart. You could try minimg size equipment to push/pull it into water and haul it out to form an artificial reef, if the marine conditions are suitable.

It's more a salvage job.

10. There's going to be damage to the hull, the engines, all the systems...
Edited on Sun Mar-13-11 09:18 PM by ixion
if the hull is sound, which it may or may not be, there will be a great deal of damage to the systems. It may not be readily apparent from the photograph, but boats are not made to lay on their side. That's why they go into dry dock.

5. I bet they get it back in the water.
It still looks straight.

Jacks, cranes and dollies.

8. While it looks intact, it probably has structural damage.
If the ships is damaged structurally, it will be cut apart.

If it was not, it would be righted by cranes onto a block structure designed to evenly support the hull and slowly rolled back to the sea. Think of how a ship is supported in a dry dock. That said, that's really costly. My bet is this ship becomes a Toyota.

11. You might be right
I use to see the ships in dry dock when I was in the Navy but never did know anything about how they worked on them. Although a large amount of damage can be corrected. Think about the ship that was damaged in the USS Cole bombing. That was a pretty big hole that was in the side of it.

13. My hunch is that the insurance company will make the call.
I expect they will find it cheaper to scrap than to right and put back to sea after repairs. I could be wrong though.

12. Looks like scrap metal to me.
I'm biased because I work for a recycler, but that looks like too much damage to salvage and make right.

14. A crane could lift that thing without even revving up the RPM's.
You would be amazed the size of things a crane can lift.

15. well, depending on the crane, of course
I'm sure there are cranes out there than could lift this thing, but your garden variety crane is probably going to be too light weight.

18. You could use two smaller cranes to similtaiously lift it.
That is also a normal operation.

I have the utmost confidence, if this ship is structually sound, the Japanese will have it back in service.
