Granted, the first time they were still dealing with a TSUNAMI and this time it's been a little better, so I really don't fault them for the less information made available last time, it was a very sad time. :(

38. It's hard to tell from the pic, but I will concur, probably a bigger blast overall.
I don't think it has affected containment, however, because they wouldn't be lying about that, too important from a social standpoint, many peoples lives will be in very big danger if primary containment is lost.

M6.2 quake rocks Ibaraki, vicinity
TOKYO, March 14, Kyodo

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 rocked Ibaraki Prefecture and its vicinity Monday morning, following the catastrophic quake on Friday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries and no tsunami warning was issued after the 10:02 a.m. quake, which measured 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in the southern part of Ibaraki.

The focus of the quake was at 10 kilometers depth in the Pacific Ocean off Ibaraki Prefecture.

But on the prefecture map I found, the nearest I can find in Ibaragi, which is just south of Fukushima.
http://gojapan.about.com/cs/japanmaps/l/blprefecturemap.htm

Is that a spelling difference or are those different places altogether?

51. From Wikipedia:

It says basically that one theory is that long ago, the villagers constructed a pit filled with thorns in order to thwart robbers.

I also discovered that people from Ibaraki tend to pronounce it as "Ibaragi" with a "g".

0406: The Japanese government has just said there was no marked change in the radiation level after the blast at Reactor 3. Crew members received a month's worth of radiation in about an hour, government officials were quoted as saying.

Military Crew Said to Be Exposed to Radiation, but Officials Call Risk in U.S. Slight
By WILLIAM J. BROAD
Published: March 13, 2011

The Pentagon was expected to announce that the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, which is sailing in the Pacific, passed through a radioactive cloud from stricken nuclear reactors in Japan, causing crew members on deck to receive a month’s worth of radiation in about an hour, government officials said Sunday.

The officials added that American helicopters flying missions about 60 miles north of the damaged reactors became coated with particulate radiation that had to be washed off.

There was no indication that any of the military personnel had experienced ill effects from the exposure. (Everyone is exposed to a small amount of natural background radiation.)

That sounds to me like they were in the Miyagi area, which is where the increased radiation was reported in the area around the Onagawa nuclear plant. So, this must be the debris from the 1st explosion at Fukushima which traveled north to Miyagi.
Glad the helicopters provided protection for them while in the air.
