110313-N-ZI955-023 NAVAL AIR FACILITY MISAWA, Japan (March 13, 2011) Staff Sgt. Travis Lausier, right, and Spc. Jason Hayes, both assigned to the Japan District Veterinary Command, Misawa Branch, draw blood from "Lago," while his handler, Tim Dinges, comforts him. Dinges and Lago are with Virginia Task Force 1 of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, and arrived at Misawa Air Base to take part in search and rescue efforts in Sendai, Japan. --------

Note, dogs in search and rescue teams do not get baseline blood tests before deployment as they arrive at a zone... unless there is a chemical\ bacteriological\nuclear issue.

This is baseline testing

Oh and Lago, good dog, who's a good dog?

3. Nope and I am guessing they are doing that
with all them humans too.

The most protective gear people tried with these dogs, were booties to protect their feet... from debris. The dogs hated them.

4. Probably not possible. Need plastic clothing and gas masks.
Plastic clothing so you can strip it off and leave any contaminated particulates behind.
Gas mask to keep the particulates from going into the lungs
Iodine tablets because Iodine is a gas and will go through the mask, thus accumulate in the thyroid.

5. Wouldn't there be multiple chemical/toxic contaminants?
Not necessarily nuclear? These were working ports.

I saw tens of thousands of shipping containers spread over the landscape like child's toys. I would imagine some of those held all sorts of toxic substances. These were also agricultural communities - the fertilizers and toxic poisons used in intensive farming are enough by themselves.
Huge gas refineries have been torn apart, the contents of sewage treatment plants now blanket the landscape. I would imagine there are plenty of chemicals/toxics to worry about without it needing to be nuclear fallout.
